Comes across juicy and ripe, with layered plum, blackberry and black olive flavors. Smooth on the finish, with a dark, mildly herbal salutation.

Dark and earthy up front, with aromas of blackberry, hard spices and fresh tomato. The palate is jammy and deep, with brimming tannins supporting earthy, woodsy flavors of blackberry, moss and licorice. Flattens out somewhat on the finish, turning heavier and more rich. Drink over the next two years.

Haras 2005 Albis Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère (Maipo Valley)

This mature blend of Cabernet and Carmenère shows classic Maipo characteristics on the nose and palate. It smells foresty and spicy, with cola, tobacco, olive and earthy, leathery berry aromas. Tastes rooty and like fruitcake, with coffee, spice and raisin flavors. Legitimately complex but leafy and earthy. Drink now through 2014.

A very good value Carmenère with oak and charred aromas in front of berry, herbs and olive. The body is full and the wine has a nice feel; flavors of blackberry bring herbs, pepper and black olive accents. Toasty and a bit hot on the finsh, but bold and done well.

Smells a little volatile, but with airing there’s enough baked fruit, leafiness, olive and tobacco to set things straight. Choppy and tannic on the palate, with herbal flavors of casssis, coffee and toast. Leafy and tasting of tobacco and olives on the finish. Drink now; contains 23% Syrah and Cab Franc in addition to CS and Carmenère.

Fairly chunky and full-bodied, with a definite Maipo Valley streak of herbs and olives running alongside basic berry and cassis fruit. There’s little to get thrilled or disappointed over; it’s good but standard Cabernet with Chile’s patented tobacco, olive and herbal accents.
