Hess 2006 Su'skol Vineyard Late Harvest Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

  1. $50
Excessive sweetness marred Hess’s regular 2006 Su’skol Chard, but it works in favor of this dessert bottling. Rich and custardy, it shows delicious flavors of pineapple crème brûlée, apricot marmalade, vanilla and cinnamon spice, balanced with crisp acidity.  — S.H.  (2/1/2009)

Hess 2008 Allomi Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

  1. $36
Could almost be a Cabernet Sauvignon, with ripe, concentrated blackberry, cassis and mocha-choco flavors. The tannins are strong, but very refined, in the Napa style, and the wine shows a good bite of acidity. A fine example of this variety, and should age well for a very long time.  — S.H.  (5/1/2011)

Hess 2007 Small Block Series Viognier (Mount Veeder)

  1. $28
It’s easy to get a lot of flavor from Viognier grapes, but it’s hard to make a wine that’s balanced and elegant. Hess has succeeded with this low-production wine. It’s crisp and creamy and dry, with lush flavors of tropical fruits, apricots, wildflowers, spices and toffee from French oak.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Hess 2004 Allomi Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
It is hard to believe that 41,000 cases of this wine were produced because it’s so good. Few other wineries could rise to this level at this production. Rich and dry in ripe cherry jam, blackberry pie, cassis, blueberry, smoky oak and spice flavors, it’s a complex young wine that approximates the best of Napa Valley.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

Hess 2006 Chardonnay (Monterey)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
There’s very little if any oak on this wine, which has a classic Central Coast profile of high acidity and bright, intense fruit. The flavors of limes, kiwis, passionfruit and vanilla finish long and bright. Good value in a classy, superdrinkable Chardonnay.  — S.H.  (11/15/2007)

A very nice, elegant and clean Cab that shows plenty of coastal climate balance. Fully dry, it has oak-accented flavors of blackberries, currants, mocha and spice. Good buy at this fair price.  — S.H.  (2/1/2009)

Hess 2006 Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $25
A good Cab, if a little sharp and angular. Shows pleasantly ripe flavors of blackberries, black cherries, cocoa and plums, with some sweet green herb notes.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Fans of the ripe, modern style of Chardonnay will fall in love with this bottling. It’s strong in toast, buttered popcorn, vanilla cream and peach, pear and pineapple jam flavors that dazzle and wow the palate. Easy to find, with nearly 17,000 cases produced.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)
