This is a really impressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Shows a classic Napa profile, with brilliant balance, including near-perfect tannins. Pushes the cassis flavors to the edge of the envelope, without going over the top. Gets better as it warms up in the glass.

This is an inky-black wine, with soft, jammy flavors of blackberries, cherries, dark chocolate and oak. The tannins are mountain thick but as refined as modern winemaking can make them. And the finish? Sweet and dry at the same time, which only a good wine can accomplish. Needs 5–7 years in the cellar.

Compared to Highlands’ regular Cab, this is a great example of sometimes, more is less. The ’06 Reserve is a gigantic wine, both in ripely extracted currants and in the taste of new, smoky oak. But it’s very size makes it ponderous. The question is one of ageability. It could well be a sleeper. Try beyond 2010.

There’s a big, sturdy spine of tannins in this wine, as you’d expect from the origin, but acids are soft. So lush is the blackberry and coffee fruit that it’s drinkable now. Thoroughly dry, this single-vineyard Zin is elegant and balanced.

A little sweet and definitely tannic, which gives it a rustic edge. Barbecue will play well, dancing with the intricate red and black currant, plum, anise, dark chocolate and pepper flavors. But this is also an ageable Zin. Drink now through 2012.

This is a big, tough, gritty powerhouse of a Cabernet. It’s probably an ager, tannic and very dry, packed with jammy cherry and blackberry fruit. Hold until 2009.

Distinctly Californian in the hugeness of the ripe fruit, just massive in blackberries and black cherries, liberally oaked and soft. Not particularly subtle at this time, but could do interesting things in the cellar. No guarantees.

Tasted alongside the winery’s Beatty Ranch bottling, or at least less fruity, which lets the tannins dominate. The wine is fully dry, with coffee, dried herb and pomegranate flavors.
