Hoopenburg 1998 Winemaker's Selection Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

Cedar, leather, black plum and meat juice aromas are contradicted on the palate by tart red fruit and stemminess. A bit of air brings leather and medium char, but the greenery on the finish is a tad bitter. It’s Cabernet all right, but lacks some of the richness associated with the varietal.  — K.F.  (4/1/2003)
