Huntington 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Classic Napa Cab, and very pretty. Opens with pure, strong aromas of blackcurrants and oak, with similar flavors, plus a streak of cherries and chocolate. Not a blockbuster, but delicately structured, a lovely wine with brisk but soft tannins and a dry, fruity finish.

Ripe, oaky and rich, a good example of Russian River Chard with its green apple, mineral and spicy flavors, crisp acids, ripe tannins and firm, polished structure. Balanced and clean, a very pretty wine.

This is a vigorous young Merlot, hard-wired with chunky, raw tannins. It offers a huge burst of fruit, with currant, cassis and chocolate flavors enriched by smoky oak. Not an ager, though, so drink now through 2010.

Deliciously gentle. Makes you wonder why more people don’t drink Syrah. With a soft complexity, the wine houses lush flavors of cherries, plums, mocha and violets, accented with sweet, smoky oak.

Huntington 2006 Sauvignon Blanc (Sonoma County)

The grapes are mainly from Dry Creek, with a little Russian River fruit as well, and there’s no oak, so it’s a really pure expression of Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc. It’s dry and briskly clean, with intriguingly complex citrus, apricot, wildflower, fig, white pepper, vanilla and honey flavors. What a nice cocktail wine.

From an up-and-coming winery, a nice wine with berry and earth flavors, and some rich chocolate and tobacco notes. Very dry, but it’s pretty tannic. Might soften and gain some complexity with a few years in the cellar.

Most of the grapes in this statewide blend came from Lodi and Paso Robles, and it has the character of a warm-climate Zin. Soft and delicious, the flavors are of cherries, black raspberries, chocolate truffle, licorice, cloves and smoky vanilla.
