So delicious, so drinkably good, it defines the beauty of great coastal Syrah. A bit high in alcohol, but the heat fits in well beside the white and black pepper notes, and gives a lift to the vast blackberry, cassis, bacon and sandalwood flavors. Drink now through 2014.

Incredibly rich, with ripe cherry, plum, spice and herb notes at the fore. It’s all framed in luscious, broad tannins that are firm but velvety. Long on the finish.

A blend of the Tablas Creek and Alban clones, this Grenache is from the Stolpman Vineyard. Made using whole clusters in the fermentation, it’s densely textured and brooding in tannins. But there’s an enormous core of cherry fruit and spice. Should blossom in 2009 and hold for several more years.

Fat and delicious. Marked by huge, explosive blackberry, cassis, beef jerky and pepper flavors, housed in a fine structure. Wonderful tannins, rich and firm, with enough acidity for balance. Drink this full-bodied red wine over the next five years.

This best barrels blend of all Jaffurs’s Syrahs combines charming early drinkability with some ageability. It’s vast and deep in blackberries, cassis and dark chocolate, but firm in tannins, framing delicious fruit in a sturdy structure. With a dry finish, it will provide good drinking over the next six years.

Dark purple in color and stunningly huge, with fresh young fruit, this is a thick, glyceriney Syrah stuffed with blackberry jam, espresso, cinnamon, dark chocolate and peppery notes. So fruity and so rich, but it’s also a tannic wine that will benefit from a few years of age.

A very nice wine, lush and drinkable, that demonstrates not only the pedigree of its vineyards (Stolpman and Thompson), but also the deft approach of the winemaker. Soft and juicy, it offers layers of crushed cherry, cassis, red currant, licorice, beef jerky and black pepper flavors, wrapped into rich, fine tannins. Drink now through 2010.

Shows its cool-climate origins in the brisk acidity, firm tannins and black pepper notes that accompany flavors of blackberries, plums and teriaki beef. Give this dense, dry Syrah a few years.
