Hedonistic and delicious, this richly textured wine offers a seductive blend of apricot, peach, cinnamon, vanilla, Mandarin orange and honey flavors. Thick and full on the finish.  — J.M.  (12/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Compass Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  1. $13
This beauty has it all. From Oz, a sinfully fruity wine, packed with tangerine, mango, guava and spicy peach flavors, with a solid layer of oaky complexities. Beyond the flavors is a rich, creamy texture, lifted by very high acids. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (6/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Reserve Shiraz (Frankland River)

  1. $20
Black pepper is the key player in this reserve offering—it partners with meaty, spicy notes on the nose, and bell pepper, spice and red berry on the palate. Finishes with cocoa and oak notes, and another healthy dose of black pepper.  — W.E.  (11/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Reserve Shiraz (McLaren Vale-Langhorne Creek)

  1. $20
This Reserve Shiraz is worth seeking out for its own reasons, though it isn’t quite as subtle as the Frankland River offering. Smoldering oak and mixed berry fruit aromas are warmed up by some bacon and maple notes; it’s bouncy and big in the mouth, with mixed berry fruit and vanilla flavors. Finishes dry, with herb and metallic hints, and some ripe tannins.  — W.E.  (11/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Reserve Merlot (Hunter Valley)

  1. $20
This Merlot’s bouquet offers briary fruit with spicy, hickory or marinade accents. It’s fairly substantial and easydrinking, with well-oaked mixed berries and black cherry flavors. Tangy oak gives the finish a tart bite.  — W.E.  (11/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $13
Medium-weight, with creamy, black-currant flavors, this Cab has a touch of herbal or weedy greenness on the palate. On the nose, that greenness is eucalyptus, backed by graham cracker, cassis and spice aromas. Finishes tart, with cocoa and herbal flavors.  — W.E.  (11/1/2002)

James Estate 2000 Sundara Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Hunter Valley)

  1. $9
Cabernet brings deep flavors of blackcurrants and tannic structure, while Merlot contributes softer, richer notes. The result is good drinking. It’s not complex or ageworthy, but it is clean and satisfying and won’t break your budget.  — S.H.  (6/1/2002)
