Januik Winery 2003 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
The Syrah is the superstar of Januik’s superb red wine lineup. Saturated, sappy and brilliantly detailed, it combines the audacious fruit power of perfectly ripened Washington Syrah with the zest of fresh-squeezed citrus and notes of pepper, tar and graphite. Beautiful definition and elegant power.  — P.G.  (11/15/2006)

Januik Winery 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
A great lineup of vineyards—sort of a who’s who in Washington—contributes to this excellent Cabernet. Champoux, Klipsun, Red Mountain, Seven Hills and Ciel du Cheval are all in the blend, which is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep, concentrated and tannic, it mixes dense and earthy black fruit with barrel notes of smoke…  — P.G.  (11/15/2006)

Januik Winery 2004 Lewis Vineyard Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
Dark, sappy and effusively scented with boysenberry and black cherry. It still has plenty of acid underscoring the fruit, a bit of burn in the back, but great aromas now developing secondary scents of tobacco and spice. Lewis is establishing itself as one of Washington’s best Syrah vineyards.  — P.G.  (11/1/2007)

Januik Winery 2000 Cold Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
Cold Creek is arguable Ch. Ste. Michelle’s premiere vineyard; Januik was their winemaker until recently, and they generously offered him fruit for his new winery. He’s taken the crisp, ripe, perfectly defined fruit of the vineyard and ramped it up; new oak adds layers of toast and the grapes seem extra ripe, with a honeyed richness. Exceptional.  — P.G.  (9/1/2004)

Januik Winery 2004 Cold Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
Januik knows this vineyard inside and out and takes full advantage of its strengths. Despite the malolactic treatment, the wine remains firm in structure, with green apple and spiced pear fruit. It feels soft and creamy, but has enough acid to retain its lively finish, with a lick of light butterscotch and hazelnut crème. Full, rich and seamless.  — P.G.  (10/1/2006)

Januik Winery 2003 Seven Hills Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  1. $35
From the excellent Seven Hills property, this classic Cabernet (with 10% Merlot) is consistent to the Januik style—plush, tannic and broadly flavored, with a lush palate of mixed fruits. Aged in new French barrels for 20 months, the ripe, sweet fruit is set against a finish of lightly charred, toasty oak.  — P.G.  (11/15/2006)

Januik Winery 2003 Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $25
Merlot drives the bus here, but onboard are smatterings of Cabernet Sauvignon (6%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (3%). The result is a slick, textured, integrated wine, with more character than fruity Washington Merlots. Tight and laced with lead and mineral, it benefits from some air.  — P.G.  (10/1/2006)

Januik Winery 2005 Cold Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
This is forward, fruity and quite ripe and round, with flavors of peach, pear and apricot. The acid is retained, but this is unusually ripe for the vineyard. The peach flavors dominate, nicely accented with hints of cinnamon and toast. Great fruit, good structure, much less new oak. Still quite young and needing time to add nuance, but plenty of power.  — P.G.  (11/1/2007)
