Jean-Luc Baldès 2008 Clos Triguedina Les Galets Malbec (Cahors)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Using fruit sourced from a single vineyard with great sun exposure, this wine takes its name from the stony soil. It provides great balance between the dense black fruit and the taut, minerally texture, expressing the essence of Malbec in Cahors. It certainly needs several years of aging.  — R.V.  (3/1/2013)

Jean-Luc Baldès 2006 Clos Triguedina The New Black Wine Malbec (Cahors)

By heating part of the must before vinification, Jean-Luc Baldès has revived the medieval way of making Cahors, when it was know as the black wine. It gives, literally, black colored wine, with flavors of stewed prunes allied to intense, dry tannins. Red berries add freshness, but this is more jelly, cooked fruits and darkness.  — R.V.  (2/1/2010)

Prunes and dark chocolate, rather than fresh fruits, dominate this dark-hued wine. It has big spice along with dense tannins, power and immense concentration. The acidity brings a light moment of freshness. For aging, 4–5 years.  — R.V.  (9/1/2010)

The third and most impressive wine in a series of single-vineyard wines, from the 900-foot plateau above the Lot River. This is a wine to age, very mineral in character and very structured, with tight tannins. Keep for six years and more.  — R.V.  (3/1/2011)

This is a taut, dense and minerally wine that’s packed with as much tannin as black currant fruit. The structure and layers of acidity demand long-term aging.  — R.V.  (3/1/2013)

Jean-Luc Baldès 2006 Clos Triguedina Probus Malbec (Cahors)

  • Cellar Selection
A wine that is proof that not all powerful wines also need high alcohol, this intense 13% ABV wine is concentrated, almost black in its color, a classic Malbec. It has all the solid tannins, structure, the darkest of black plums and licorice flavors. It should age well.  — R.V.  (2/1/2010)

There is great power, yet balance here. The wine has firm, rich fruits, with solid dark tannins to go with layers of fresh acidity and a dense texture. Obviously for aging, this is an impressive statement of Malbec.  — R.V.  (12/15/2010)

With its firm, black fruits, this is a very chunky wine, mineral in character. It has tension, with tannins layered with intense flavors, very structured. It needs aging. One of a series of single-vineyard wines created by Jean-Luc Baldès.  — R.V.  (3/1/2011)
