Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Cap (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
Prüm has hit a grand slam in 2005, with every bottling we’ve tasted coming in at 90-plus points. This offering has the house’s trademark yeasty, leesy scents, but also layer after layer of dense, slaty fruit balanced by crisp acidity. It’s a bit sweet for most dishes, but pairing it with foie gras or mild cheeses will allow it to shine. Should evolve gracefully for…  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

Tasted blind in the same flight as Prüm’s Bernkasteler Badstube auslese, this wine is flashier, more of an attention-grabber, with amazing purity and intensity of fruit backed by great length. The fruit flavors of green apple, pineapple and lime are underscored by slate-driven minerality, and the wine, although plump and amply endowed, is well balanced, with superb…  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
Pungent at first, with diesel notes to go with smoky, leesy scents. But give this wine time, because on the palate the quality is immediately obvious. There’s great intensity and depth married to elegance and persistence, complexity combined with purity. Flavors of apple, slate and citrus linger seemingly forever. A masterpiece that should easily last until at…  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

Leesy and sulfury, this wine is fully possessed of the “Prüm stink”, yet equally obvious is its incredible intensity and depth. Waves of tropical fruit—think guava and pineapple—cascade over the palate, yet the sweetness is beautifully balanced by acidity. Tremendously concentrated and long on the finish, this should easily live 20 years or more.  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2006 Bernkasteler Badstube Beerenauslese Goldkap Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

Filled with minerality, spice and everything nice, this incredibly intense wine is also filled with honey, gently caramelized peaches and citrus. It’s got huge presence on the palate and a virtually endless, sweet finish. It should evolve gracefully for 50 or more years.  — J.C.  (12/15/2008)

One of the most remarkable things about the J.J. Prüm wines is their ability to marry richness with lightness, and that's well displayed in this auslese. The aromas are funky-stinky at first, yet with aeration those scents merge with tropical fruit to become an indescribably complex, seamless whole. Extremely long on the finish, with echoes of passion fruit…  — J.C.  (4/1/2010)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
Strongly marked by rather stinky aromas at first, this wine reveals its full majesty on the palate, where it’s lush and round without being soft, filled with baked apple, vanilla, honey and spice notes balanced by ripe acidity. Layered and long on the finish, where it reveals more complexity with every sip. Give it a vigorous decanting if you open a bottle now, or…  — J.C.  (10/1/2007)

Joh. Jos. Prüm 2005 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

In contrast to Prüm’s Wehlener Sonnenuhr auslese, this wine is less flamboyant, more taciturn in character. The bouquet is rather sulfury and leesy but clearly suggests great potential. It’s dense and powerful on the palate, with apple, citrus and vanilla flavors that finish long and crisp. It may seem redundant to go on gushing about each of Prüm’s 2005 bottlings…  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)
