Packed with ripe, upfront raspberry, cherry and cola fruit, this Pinot certainly delivers in the flavor department. But it goes well beyond that, framing the richness in a fine structure of smooth tannins, crisp acidity and a deft application of oak. Straddles the line between immediate drinkability and ageability, so drink it now and over the next four years.

Joseph Jewell’s 2009 Elk Prairie is even better than its 2008, which is saying something. This vintage opens with perfumed cola spice and cinnamon that evolves in its lightly textured, lush mouthfeel into decadent strawberry in crème Anglaise. Bright, with a lingering finish, this Pinot Noir only gets better while in the glass.

Jewell threads the needle where so many others fail with this dry, elegant Sauvignon Blanc. Does exactly what it should, providing a mouthwateringly crisp white wine that scours and cleanses the palate. The flavors are of limes, lemons, grapefruits, wildflowers and stony, tangy minerals. Really a brilliant wine, among the best of its class.

Shows all the hallmarks of an ageable Pinot Noir. The raspberry, cherry and cola flavors are very rich, but the structure is immaculate. Fine, firm tannins combine with zesty acidity to create a tightness in the mouth. As nice as this Pinot is, it will develop bottle nuances over the next six years.

This is a restaurant-style Pinot Noir, classy and restrained. It shows classic raspberry, cherry, cola, pomegranate and spice flavors, with brisk Russian River acidity and a silky mouthfeel. Doesn’t seem like an ager, but it’s a lovely wine now and for the next few years.

This rich, spicy Zinfandel defines the Dry Creek style. It’s fruit-forward in briary, brambly berry and currant flavors that have hints of anise and chocolate, and is dry, with sturdy tannins and a balancing cut of acidity. Very enticing. Only 150 cases were produced, but it’s worth a search.

Another fine Sauvignon Blanc from Joseph Jewell. It’s dry and crisp in acidity, offering classic Sauvignon flavors of citrus fruits, pears, lemongrass, minerals, spices, vanilla and toast, leading to a long, clean finish. A lovely cocktail wine, at a fair price.

The winery has a good track record with this vineyard, and with the 2010, they’ve produced another fine one. Although it has a lush, creamy, drink-me-now quality, it’s actually quite complex with fresh raspberries and red currants. Drink by 2017 or so.
