Justin 2006 Reserve Cabernet (Paso Robles)

Although this Cab is quite tannic, it’s really good now. Shows impeccable balance in a New World style that oozes black and red currants, dark chocolate, licorice, cedar and plums, with a note of raw, bloody meat. Very high quality, an excellent rendition of western Paso Robles hillside Cabernet. Good through 2015, with proper cellaring.

A tremendous wine that easily held its own against Napa Cabs and blends, and a worthy followup to the wonderful 2006. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the wine is extraordinarily rich and balanced and refined, showing Paso softness, but no absence of complexity. Really impresses for the depth and range of berries, currants…

Justin 2004 Justification Red (Paso Robles)

Justin proves that Bordeaux can succeed in western Paso Robles, but interestingly, the wine is Cab Franc and Merlot, with no Sauvignon. Both varieties do well in cooler areas, and this wine does have good acidity and a rich earthiness suggesting butter-sauteed mushrooms with a splash of soy. An interesting, complex wine; a natural beauty to pair with food.

This is quite easily the best Justin Cabernet ever. The wine achieves a new height of richness of fruit, dazzling with waves of blackberries, blueberries, cassis and chocolate, liberally enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Yet it’s bone dry, and the tannins are immaculate, with enough acids for balance. Gorgeous now with haute cuisine.

Justin 2010 Focus Red (Paso Robles)

This is a new bottling from Justin, and it’s one of its best wines in years. Blended mostly from Syrah, with a splash of Mourvèdre and Grenache, it’s rich, ripe and velvety smooth. The wine shows a warm-climate touch of overripeness in the chocolate-covered raisin flavor, which gives it a Port-like warmth. Otherwise, the flavors veer toward blackberry and cassis liqueur.
