Kaesler 2005 Old Bastard Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $140
From vines planted in 1893, this wine combines spicy complexity with size and ultraconcentrated fruit. It tips the scales at 16% alcohol, but wears it well, hiding it under hints of licorice and subtle wood spice and layers of blackberry and blueberry fruit. Yes, it’s big, but it’s not inelegant, finishing lush, long and spicy. Terrific stuff that should drink well…  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Kaesler 2006 Old Vine Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $60
This wine’s concentrated dark fruit shows in the color—a vibrant dark garnet—and in the aromas of blueberry, vanilla and dried spices. The 16% alcohol is well concealed, manifesting only as wonderfully full, creamy density on the palate, magnifying the intense cola, earth and spice complexity. A pronounced peppery, black licorice note adds extra length to the…  — J.C.  (6/1/2009)

Kaesler 2006 The Bogan Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $60
Take superripe Barossa Shiraz from old vines, put it into 80% new American oak and the result is this hedonistic mouthful of wine. It’s full-bodied and creamy in texture; blueberry fruit combines with cola, earth and spice nuances. Long and velvety on the finish, where it picks up hints of cocoa.  — J.C.  (6/1/2009)

Kaesler 2006 Old Bastard Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $190
From vines planted more than a century ago, this richly concentrated, voluptuous wine blossoms with time in the glass, revealing aromas of brandied black cherries and dark chocolate. The tannins are creamy smooth, the length on the palate prodigious. But at 15.5% alcohol, this wine’s warmth is noticeable; opt for drinking it over the next 10 years.  — J.C.  (2/1/2010)

Kaesler 2004 The Bogan Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $65
Big and bold, with an unmistakable hit of American oak—vanilla and dill—on the nose, but also huge levels of fruit concentration. Creamy, thick and mouthfilling, loaded with blackberries and spice. The long, robust finish suggests a certain amount of ageability, although this is certainly enjoyable now. Drink now–2015.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Kaesler 2005 The Bogan Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $65
Big and bold, like the excellent ’04 version. If anything, it emphasizes the fruit even a bit more, with less spicy complexity, but it’s a black hole of plum and blackberry fruit that explodes in the mouth, staining the palate with fruity intensity. The alcohol level must be elevated, but it’s well concealed by supple tannins. Drink now–2015.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Kaesler 2001 Old Vine Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

  1. $45
This vintage, I preferred this wine to the flagship Old Bastard—it’s more versatile, and at half the price of the Old Bastard, it feels like a steal. Opens with lovely coffee, mocha and earth aromas, with only the slightest trace of barnyard. The fruit on the palate has tremendous staying power—it’s a big basket of fresh-picked berries that just won’t go away.  — D.T.  (2/1/2004)

Kaesler 2005 Avignon Red (Barossa Valley)

  1. $30
A blend of approximately 40% each Grenache and Shiraz with 20% Mataro, Kaelser’s 2005 Avignon offers up explosive notes of licorice and plum, hints of lighter stone fruits, like peach or apricot, then finishes with blackberries, cola and vanilla. Lush and smooth, an opulent mouthful for near-term consumption.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)
