Kaiken 2007 Mai Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $85
Blackberry, raisin, cola, moss and spice aromas form a potpourri of Malbec excellence. This is super deep and dense stuff; it’s tight and ripped with tannins and acids. Flavors of licorice, blackberry, dark plum and oak are layered and serious. The first Mai made by Kaiken, and it’s ready now through 2016.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Kaiken 2010 Ultra Malbec (Luján de Cuyo)

  1. $20
This is opaque, offering a lush collection of black fruit aromas on what amounts to a deep, dense bouquet. Layered and displaying excellent size and texture, it has saturated, meaty black-fruit flavors along with toasty, integrated oak. A powerhouse Malbec and maybe the best Ultra to date.  — M.S.  (12/31/2012)

Kaiken 2002 Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
This new brand from Montes in Chile scored big with its inaugural Cabernet and the Malbec is just as good, if not better. The tint is a purple haze, while the nose is dark, masculine and full of ultraripe black fruit. Deep and rich throughout--and totally delicious--it’s what good South American reds are all about: bursting fruit, body and value.  — M.S.  (3/1/2005)

Kaiken 2003 Ultra Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $23
The inaugural premium Malbec from Montes S.A.’s fledgling Argentinean venture displays round, attractive aromas of concentrated black fruit and hefty oak. The palate is bold, chewy and rich, while fine tannins and lively acidity keep any potential holes well plugged. Tastes sweet, dark, fruity and ripe, with vanilla and coffee on the finish. Tremendously satisfying.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Kaiken 2004 Ultra Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $25
Fairly well roasted and beefy, with dark-fruit aromas and a strong hint of chocolate on the nose. The palate is international in personality, meaning developed berry flavors are blended with oak-based toast and chocolate. It really spreads its wings on the finish, and should drink nicely for another three years.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)

Sound as can be on the nose, with rubber, baked berry and pastry aromas. The palate has a very nice feel to it along with flavors of dark, rich blackberry, roasted black plum, chocolate, fig and mocha. Lush, modern and smooth, with just the right weight, kick and bite. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)

Kaiken 2009 Ultra Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Saturated aromas of black currant and blueberry are nuanced with wood smoke, herb and mint notes. This feels ripped and tannic, but balanced, with toasty flavors of blackberry, cassis, herb and espresso. It’s persistent on the finish; drink now–2015.  — M.S.  (8/1/2012)

Kaiken 2006 Ultra Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $25
Kaiken Ultra has emerged as a consistent top-shelf Malbec. This vintage shows power, purity, mineral, ripe fruit and well-applied oak. It’s a generous wine with kirsch and raspberry parfait flavors. It almost makes it to creamy but by holding onto its core acidity it guards overall balance. Unforced but a little forceful; good for those who like a ripe, meaty red wine.  — M.S.  (12/1/2008)
