Kana 2008 Masterpiece Elephant Mountain Vineyard Reserve White (Yakima Valley)

  1. $20
Impressive. This Viognier/Marsanne/Roussanne blend showcases substantial, layered fruit flavors of citrus skin, citrus pulp, grapefruit and white peach. The Viognier was done in stainless, the other grapes in barrel, bringing in subtle notes of vanilla. Spicy, full-bodied and just plain delicious.  — P.G.  (10/1/2010)

Kana 2006 Scarlet Fire Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Reserve Red (Red Mountain)

  1. $25
A big (15.6% alcohol) and assertive Rhône blend. Red Mountain’s iconic Ciel du Cheval vineyard is the source of the excellent fruit, which brings a mix of black pepper, wild ferns, herbs, tart raspberries and cold stone. Penetrating and compact.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Kana 2006 Reserve Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
High-toned, with penetrating aromas of smoked ham and a whiff of the good funk. That cured meat character follows across the palate, along with bright, brambly strawberry/cherry fruit and vivacious acids.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Kana 2006 Old Vines Red (Yakima Valley)

  1. $18
Mostly Lemberger, from a 1979 planting, this is an explosion of sweet berry and milk chocolate—what’s not to like? Luscious and full across the palate, it’s a raspberry truffle in a bottle. Not sweet, so not for dessert, but in a way it is dessert all by itself.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Kana 2008 Katie Mae White Table Wine Riesling (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $14
Though labeled simply White Table Wine, this is all Riesling, done in an off-dry (3.1% residual sugar) style. The fruit is a powerful burst of apricot and peach, annotated with honey and caramel apples. It’s sweet enough to have a little brown sugar-style graininess as well; could work with some desserts but also with spicy foods if the wine is well chilled.  — P.G.  (10/1/2010)

Kana 2004 Dark Star Red Table Wine (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $20
The winery has substantially changed the blend and vineyard sources in 2004, and this is a better Dark Star than the last couple of vintages. It’s roughly two-thirds Syrah, with Mourvèdre and Grenache filling in the final third of the blend. The wine is sappy and strong, packed with flavors of berries, cherries and cassis, and it carries through a medium long…  — P.G.  (5/1/2007)

Kana 2006 Dark Star Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $20
This is almost entirely Syrah, done in a high-acid, citrusy style. Flavors are sharply etched and tight—pomegranate, raspberry, baking chocolate and espresso. Straightforward and well-balanced despite its 15% alcohol.  — P.G.  (9/1/2010)

Kana 2004 Snipes Mountain Vineyard Malbec (Yakima Valley)

  1. $18
Kana does a bit better with this concentrated Malbec which shows very tart blackberry, licorice and roasted espresso flavors. There’s plenty of acid to balance out the big fruit and alcohol, and the tannins have been well managed. This appears to be a wine that could well improve with up to five years of cellaring. Right now it’s very tight.  — P.G.  (5/1/2007)
