Wow. An incredible (and affordable) example of what Mourvèdre can be in certain nooks and crannies of the Sierra Foothills and in certain hands. Here winemaker and owner Hank Beckmeyer has made a silk mountai wine out of a tough vintage, taking organically farmed Mourvèdre from the folks over at Cedarville (who have their own label too) and made a gorgeous, pure…

There’s magic up in Hank Beckmeyer’s hills. The Suma Kaw Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills is a prized source for Rhône varieties, where the Mourvèdre typically gets blended in with Syrah, but not here, where it is given room to exude fresh, bright, earthy tones amid an intensity of raspberry, strawberry and just-ripe cherry. A hint of leather surfaces on the finish.

Winemaker Hank Beckmeyer goes where his vinous muses take him and this new wine of his is a perfect example of his “why not” attitude. It contains 56% Nebbiolo from the Sumu Kaw Vineyard as well as 30% Syrah from the same, 9% Mourvèdre, 2.5% Viognier and 2.5% Roussanne. It’s jam-packed in a lilting way with fresh, bright strawberry and intense aromas of perfume and…

Suma Kaw has been a vaunted vineyard source for some of the best Syrah in the Foothills. Opening with a gust of peppercorn and an herbal thread of pine, this Syrah dances on the edge of being overwhelming, with intense tannins weaving between the flavors of bright red fruit and smoky meat. It’s enjoyable now, and will drink well in several years, too.

The Suma Kaw Syrah from Hank Beckmeyer is an intriguing combination of great site and experimental winemaker. It’s woody and herbal with a menthol sheen and an unexpectedly bright crispness contrasted by dark, savory meat and smoke. A wine that’ll start conversations, enjoy it with roasted, herb-encrusted meats—the culinary equivalent of the wine.

An eclectic red blend from Hank Beckmeyer’s hillside vineyard, this is comprised of 28% Tannat, 24% Tempranillo, 24% Syrah, 22% Grenache and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Demonstrating La Clarine Farm’s rich, signature aromatics, it’s so pretty in the glass, smelling of violet and rose. On the palate, the wine is earthy and stony, with dark strawberry and cherry flavors…

Winemaker Hank Beckmeyer presses Syrah and Mourvèdre to make this rosé, hoping that in the process he’ll best preserve the wine’s aromas and also keep it tasting fresh. He’s created a nutty wine that’s dominant in strawberry and stone fruit flavors. It’s very light and dry, leaving you with the impression of having just bitten into a piece of watermelon.
