La Jota Vineyard 2002 21st Anniversary Release Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $90
Classic Howell Mountain tannins, powerful and focused, but ripely sweet, frame opulent cherry, cassis, plum sauce and new oak flavors, and for all that, there’s a crisp edge of acidity that makes everything clean and bright. Drink now through 2012.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

La Jota Vineyard 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

The tannins are so fierce on this baby Cabernet that they effectively lock it down and make it tough to drink now. Yet there’s a fabulous core of blackberries that are rich, ripe and intense. Everything about it suggests ageability. Give it at least eight years in a proper cellar, and it could age even longer.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)

La Jota Vineyard 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $50
Classic Napa mountain Cab, intensely concentrated in fruit, richly tannic, and dry, and of course, such a wine needs and deserves the new oak they lavished on it. Flavors and structure perfectly balance, with massive cherry pie, cassis and mocha flavors meshing with sweetly ripe tannins and rich barrel notes of vanilla and char. This is a dramatic, complex young…  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

La Jota Vineyard 2009 Cabernet Franc (Howell Mountain)

Hard to describe the balance and elegance of this Cabernet Franc, although it’s pretty hard in tannins. Below that is a fabulous core of blackberry, black cherry and mineral flavors. Rich, complex and dramatic, this is arguably one of the best Cab ernet Francs on the market. Drink now–2017.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)

La Jota Vineyard 2001 Anniversary Release Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

  1. $93
La Jota set out to make a great wine for their 20th, and lucky for them they ran into such a vintage. If it’s less dense than the finest 2001s, it’s still a great one. As flavorful as sweet Napa black currants get, and those Howell tannins are the structure that will let this wine develop through 2010.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

La Jota Vineyard 2004 *Barrel Sample* Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

Gorgeous aromas of blackberry tart, vanilla and oak lead to strong, rich fruity flavors of cherries and blackberries. So ripe, it finishes almost sweet. Rich in tannins, and compelling for its depth and harmony.  — S.H.  (8/1/2004)

La Jota Vineyard 2006 Cabernet Franc (Napa Valley)

  1. $60
A very nice, dry Cab Franc that shows real elegance and sophistication. The tannins are rather fierce, with a sandpapery astringency, and the wine shows a deep, pure core of red and black cherries. Delicious and complex, but those tannins need rich fare for balance. Lamb comes to mind.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)
