La Rochelle 2009 Donum Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $75
The Donum Estate Vineyard has been producing some of Carneros’s best Pinot Noirs of late. This is a complex bottling, with notes of raspberry jam and vanilla, and the mouthfeel is pleasingly tart. Production was only 55 cases, but it’s worth a special search.  — S.H.  (4/1/2013)

La Rochelle 2005 Garys' Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $52
Very full-bodied and rich, offering a wealth of ripe fruit and even some dry, gritty tannins, this will stand some time in the cellar. It’s explosive in red and black cherry pie, currant, raspberry and cola flavors, with a rich edge of melted milk chocolate, and the vanilla spice and caramel of new oak. Just a tremendous palate experience.  — S.H.  (8/1/2008)

La Rochelle 2003 Classic Clones Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
Easily the best of La Rochelle’s three Pinots, with a zesty acidity that frames ripe cherries, pomegranates, cola, oak and citrus zest. The Arroyo Seco is an under-appreciated appellation in Salinas Valley, while the clonal mix of this wine consists of older selections, not today’s cleaned-up Dijon specimens. This is a complex, addictive Pinot. Best now and for a…  — S.H.  (7/1/2006)

La Rochelle 2010 Ferrington Vineyard Chardonnay (Anderson Valley)

  1. $65
Comes down on the austere side of Chardonnay, trading the modern flashy style for a sober, streamlined wine. It’s bone dry and bright in acidity, with lemon, lime, honey and mineral flavors, touched with sweet oak. Expensive, but elegant and complex. Will challenge sommeliers to come up with the perfect pairing. Consider shellfish first.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)

La Rochelle 2009 Dutton Ranch Campbell Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $48
This is a delicious Pinot Noir, packed with cherries and raspberries, with a deft touch of oak. Shows a light, delicate structure, like satin, with the richness brightened by tart acidity. Defines the elegant, drink-me-now Pinot style, but it should develop well over the next six years.  — S.H.  (8/1/2012)

La Rochelle 2010 Dutton Ranch Morelli Lane Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  1. $65
Upfront citrus, tropical fruit, peach and apple flavors mark this rich Chardonnay, plus notes of buttered toast and caramel. The opulence is balanced by crisp acidity and stony minerality.  — S.H.  (4/1/2013)

La Rochelle 2001 San Vicente Vineyard Pinot Noir (Monterey)

  1. $30
An exceedingly fine Pinot, as juicy as they get. Oodles of elaborate cherry, raspberry, root beer, gingerbread and mocha flavors, oaky and spicy, wrapped in a silky texture, with clean, bright acidity. Shows real complexity and finesse.  — S.H.  (12/15/2004)

This is a dry wine, yet the flavors of raspberries and cherries are sweet tasting. It has a delicate, silky mouthfeel, and the tart acids add plenty of cut. Pair this with grilled, broiled or pan-fried steak, served with mushrooms.  — S.H.  (4/1/2013)
