This is a smooth, balanced and intense wine that opens with a deep, saturated appearance and plush aromas of sweet spice, rum cake, leather, tobacco and ripe blackberry. This bold, modern expression of Brunello shows acidity and tannins that are firm, but not biting.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

La Serena 2000 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
Pure violet in color, with a nose packed full of creamy oak, sweet plum and blackberry. This is your prototypical modern-day bruiser. The palate offers a powder keg of sweet, chewy fruit, yet the acidity is right there corralling it all. Properly applied oak cuddles rather than overwhelms the fruit, while the full tannins make it a lion heart. Fabulous for a 2000…  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

La Serena 2006 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

La Serena offers an amazing wine with rich smoothness and loads of chocolate and cherry intensity. In the mouth, the wine tastes round and soft with bright almond and cinnamon notes on the close. Pair it with saltimbocca, or veal steaks wrapped in ham and sage leaf.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

La Serena 1999 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

Earthy and rusty in color, but liquid gold in the mouth. It’s round, complete and subtle. The dry red fruit is touched up by accents of root beer, smoke and brown sugar. When drinking, a vise grip of tannins clamp down. That said, maturity seems in sight. Start drinking in 2005.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

Smoky overtones of barbecue and pipe tobacco fill in the background and provide a platform for all the busy cherry and ripe berry notes presented on the nose. It’s a big, bold style with loads of savory spice, black pepper and smoked bacon. Drink after 2015.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

La Serena 2001 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

Generous dollops of coffee bean, cherry syrup, cedar wood and tobacco greet the nose. Lacks nuances but does deliver creamy consistency and attractive espresso notes on the finish.  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)

Here is a super dark and concentrated Brunello with aromas of black cherry, blackberry pie, teriyaki sauce, leather, cured meat and moist pipe tobacco. The wine is definitely chewy and ripe, but with great structure and a velvety texture.  — M.L.  (5/1/2013)
