Laetitia

The Laetitia Estate Vineyards were first planted in 1982 when French winery Maison Deutz first discovered the Arroyo Grande Valley just south of Pismo Beach. These French viticulturists believed the growing conditions in this area of California were similar to that of their homeland in Epernay according to our Laetitia wine reviews. Some 15 years later, Jean-Claude Tardivat purchased the land and renamed the estate vineyard after his daughter Laetitia. One year later, the winery was sold again to a partnership that included Selim Zilkha, founder of a successful wind power development company and proponent of environmental sustainability. The focus of Laetitia wines are on Pinot Noir, however they also produce Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Tempranillo, Syrah, Pinot Gris, and a small amount of Riesling according to our Laetitia wine ratings. The estate Laetitia vineyard has 620 acres planted to grape vines, making it the largest privately owned Pinot Noir plantings in California. Laetitia 2004 La Colline Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
Extremely complex, and while it shows powerful red cherry, cola, rhubarb and tea flavors, it maintains the essential elegance that Pinot requires. The acidity is wonderful. Vey, very dry. So balanced, so layered, so drinkable.  — S.H.  (7/1/2006)

Laetitia 2005 Les Galets Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
A sensational Pinot Noir for its complexity, ageability and sheer deliciousness. The parts haven’t come together yet, but each is great. Smoky new oak dominates, closely followed by enormously ripe crushed cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, cola and mocha flavors. There’s a rich tannin-acid structure, and the sweet, spicy oak reprises on the finish. This big…  — S.H.  (11/1/2007)

Laetitia 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  1. $40
Laetitia’s best reserve ever. In a word, gorgeous. There’s a soft silkiness, a caressingly smooth mouthfeel that just seduces the palate into submission. Then the deliciousness sinks in, all red currants, cherries, mocha, licorice, pepper and smoke, set off with fine acidity and tannins. So compulsively drinkable, you can’t keep your hands off it. Best now through 2010.  — S.H.  (12/31/2008)

Laetitia 2003 Les Galets Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  1. $60
This block designate from Laetitia’s estate vineyard comes from a warmer, eastern site. It is high in acidity and extremely dry. The flavors and mouthfeel are so complex that it takes several sips to grasp what’s going on, by which time the wine has climbed to even higher levels. This is truly great California Pinot Noir.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Laetitia 2003 La Colline Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
Tasted side by side with Laetitia’s Les Galets bottling, this wine is virtually identical. The differences are minute. Colline is perhaps a shade more acidic, a bit leaner, a little drier and more tannic. But like Galets, it is an authentically great, young Pinot Noir, as elegant and complex as any Pinot of the vintage.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Laetitia 2006 Les Galets Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley)

  1. $60
Laetita’s Les Galets bottling comes from a single vineyard block. The ’06 is rich, velvety, complex and compelling. Fully dry, it has remarkably deep, tannin-inspired flavors of cherry pie, currants, mocha, licorice, peppercorn and smoky new oak. Just addictive, and should hold well for six years.  — S.H.  (12/31/2008)

Brilliant and delicious. Shows the elegant dryness of a superior Arroyo Grande Pinot, with massively ripe and complex flavors of black and red cherry pie, raspberry and strawberry jam, beef jerky, cola and smoky oak. Wonderful and glamorous and fun, yet serious. Bring on the ahi tuna tartare.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Absolutely, compulsively delicious. Totally a California-style bubbly, it’s dazzlingly rich in cherry, raspberry, brioche, vanilla and spice flavors, with crisply sharp acids for balance, and a satisfying dosage for softness. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.  — S.H.  (7/1/2007)
