Casa Lapostolle Winery was founded by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet in 1994. The Marnier Lapostolle family also founded and currently owns the popular French liqueur Grand Marnier. It was Alexandra’s vision to create world-class wines using traditional French wine making techniques in combination with the terroir of Chile. Early on Alexandra brought in French enologists Michel Friou and world-renowned winemaker Michel Rolland to oversee all aspects of the business according to our Casa Lapostolle wine reviews. Casa Lapostolle wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, and Syrah from plantings throughout the Casa Lapostolle vineyards located in Casablanca, Cachapoal and Colchagua (home of the revered Apalta Vineyard). Casa Lapostolle offers a wide range of wines from their value Casa line to their higher end Cuvee Alexandre line. However it is typically their Clos Apalta Bordeaux blend that receives the highest accolades according to our Casa Lapostolle wine ratings. Clos Apalta, depending on your point of view, is arguably Chile’s best wine. And this vintage is outstanding! Earth, minty spice, ripe berry, minerality and smoky aromas cover the bases. It’s superbly structured, with a fine texture and depth. Tastes lush and complex, with blackberry, crème de cassis, fine herbs and tobacco. Finishes classy. Drink now through 2016.

Once again, Clos Apalta distinguishes itself as one of Chile’s best wines. The bouquet is dark and slightly minty, with licorice, shoe polish and ripe, herb-tinged black fruit. Saturated and deep in the mouth, with cola, cassis, black cherry and blackberry flavors. Chewy wine; still has some oak to resolve. Best from 2011.

Outstanding as always. Right from the first take it has an elevated sense of being. The nose is rich, warm and deeply fruited, with balsam wood and lemony notes. It’s deep as a coal mine on the palate, with herbal, tobacco and leather accents sprucing up serious berry fruit flavors. Minty and sly on the finish, and lovely overall. Drink now through 2016.

Typically intense, polished and smooth up front, this has concentrated aromas of graphite, cola, wild berry, spice, coconut and wood. It feels full and makes a statement on the palate, where baked, earthy, fully loaded flavors of clove, herb and black fruit hold court. Oaky and spicy on the finish, this needs another 2–4 years to fully settle.

Excellent Cabernet at any price, and one of the best Lapostolle wines we’ve tasted. Pitch dark and layered, with pulsating berry, tobacco, earth and charcoal aromas. Luscious on the palate, where plum, cherry and cassis flow toward a classic finish of soft tannins and chocolate. Immensely ripe and tasty.
