The bouquet is nicely perfumed and floral, with noticeable oak and spice augmenting plum aromas. The palate offers some heft, although it’s maybe a bit overoaked. But that oak does contribute mocha and coffee flavors. The finish is expressive and tannic enough to apply a firm grip. —M.S.

The bouquet is fun: Leather, violets and a strange, lean spiciness come up and out. The palate is tight, with lots of spice and nondescript berry fruit. The finish is hard and dry, and the mouthfeel is grainy, a reflection of young, robust tannins. —M.S.

Mineral aromas lead the muscular nose forward in powerful fashion. The palate yields some spicy mint and clove but also a lot of oak-covered fruit; it’s not entirely dissimilar to chocolate-covered cherries. The finish seems a bit thick, and it’s also sweet, much like the wine as a whole. —M.S.

Very woody, with distinct aromas of vanilla and sawdust. The tight-knit palate has hidden black fruit and lots of bitter chocolate, the latter courtesy of some heavy barrel char. If the dark elements of barrel aging; i.e., charcoal and espresso, turn you on, then give this a go. But if not, the advice here is probably to steer clear. —M.S.
