Dark colored, highly perfumed wine, packing rich fruit with its ripe, chunky structure. Black berries give a juicy character, taming the acidity, and allowing the wood smoke to wreath around the wine. Age for at leasy six years, but this can withstand more.

Showing the typical power of Corton-Charlemagne, this is a classic wine that offers full-on fruit allied to a strong wood element. It is rich and bold, flavored with white fruits, apricots, almonds and spice. While it is drinkable now, it would certainly repay cellaring for 3–4 years.

A big bruiser of a wine. It is easy to love the firm, complex structure allied with beautifully ripe, sweet fruit flavors. The wine is rich and powerful, but there are so many things going on here, from the intense tannins to the smoky black finish.

Maison Champy 2008 Les Cazetiers Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Gevrey-Chambertin)

The steep Cazetiers vineyard is among the best of Gevrey’s Premier Crus. This is a robust wine that can take all the wood thrown at it and still come back tasting of sweet plums and fresh raspberries. The tannins, with their smoky character, shine right through the heart of the wine.

Champy only makes two barrels of this wine. It’s finely concentrated, and it has solid tannins and rich, powerful black-plum and cherry flavors. Keep it for at least 8–9 years.

Maison Champy 2006 Les Chalumeaux Premier Cru Chardonnay (Puligny-Montrachet)

A wine that brings out all the minerality of Puligny. That makes it taut and structured but at the same time the fruit element plays a vital part. With citrus and apple skin, layered with fresh green plums, this is both complex and deliciously fruity. The vanilla flavors from wood aging round out the wine.
