Marqués de Riscal 1996 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

Although this bottle didn’t show quite as well as the one rated last year (92 points, 10/03), it’s still a fine wine. Tobacco, earth, vanilla and coffee aromas, backed by black cherry and cassis. It’s bigger than the 2000 Reserva, but just as supple and ready to drink.  — W.E.  (11/1/2004)

Marqués de Riscal 2001 Baron de Chirel Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $60
Dark violet in color, with plenty of wood smoke and earth to the nose, which also offers tobacco and mushroom. Dynamic on the palate, with ripe cherry and blackberry flavors. Sort of airy on the finish, with mocha and chocolate. Hefty throughout, with nice tannins. From Marqués de Riscal. Imported by Shaw-Ross International Importers.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Marqués de Riscal 2000 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $40
Dry and nicely oaked, with hints of fine aged cheese, campfire, dried fruits and leather. The palate is a little more fruity than the nose, but still it’s dry and tight, with raspberry and cherry flavors. While some acidity sits on the surface, overall this gran reserva is tasty, fresh and more than likable. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Marqués de Riscal 1996 Baron de Chirel Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $60
Slick and very much in the modern international style, this smooth operator has the dark, toasty oak and vanilla over black fruit profile seen often, and from many places. But it’s undeniably tasty, and its bright tart-sweet fruit, coffee and chocolate accents and substantial feel is pleasing. Finishes long and tasty with espresso and vanilla accents, full but…  — M.M.  (9/1/2002)

Marqués de Riscal 1999 Baron de Chirel Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $60
Firmly structured and ageworthy, with loads of vanillin oak but also masses of dark fruit, earth, molasses and tobacco flavors that linger on the finish. In contrast to the rest of Riscal’s offerings, this one needs time in the cellar. Try in 2008 or so.  — W.E.  (12/31/2004)

Marqués de Riscal 1998 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $36
All it takes is a quick sniff and it’s clear that this is the real thing. Aromas of sweet black cherry, marzipan and dried earth create a classic bouquet. Additional pure cherry on the palate with chocolate; together they strike the right chord. Harmonious and still worthy of some more aging. Imported by Shaw-Ross International Importers.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Marqués de Riscal 2001 Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $50
Deep and earthy on the nose, with cedar, tobacco and plodding berry aromas. This is more full and thick than light and elegant; the palate is fruity and tannic, with plump plum and dark berry flavors. Chocolaty but monotone on the finish. Drink now.  — M.S.  (2/1/2012)
