Mastroberardino

Mastroberardino Winery was established in 1750 by Pietro di Berardino who adopted the title of Mastro, which eventually merged with Berardino. However Angelo Mastroberardino didn’t officially register the company into the Avellino Chamber of Commerce until 1878. This is why he is recognized as official founder, even though Mastroberardino Vineyards had been producing wine for several decades prior. The Mastroberardino estate was crucial in the revitalization of Campania’s traditional varietals, and is said to be responsible for the resurrection of the Fiano, Greco di Tufa, and Aglianico varietals according to our Mastroberadino wine reviews. The winery stakes its reputation on their Aglianico Mastroberardino wines which effectively established the reputation of Taurasi and helped it to gain DOCG designation in 1992. Mastroberadino produces roughly 200,000 cases a year with plantings of over 725 acres, 300 of which are under direct family ownership. Today the company is owned and operated by family members representing the tenth generation (represented by Piero Mastroberardino) since the establishment of its historical headquarters in Atripalda. Mastroberardino 1999 Riserva Cento Trenta Aglianico (Taurasi)

  • Cellar Selection
This is a beautifully aged Collector’s Edition of Taurasi made to celebrate Mastroberardino’s 130th anniversary as an exporter of wine to Europe and America. Elegant and aristocratic, the wine delivers fine notes of resin, molasses, black licorice, prune and plum cake. The intensity of flavors is remarkable and the wine has thick, impenetrable density and solid tannins.  — M.L.  (10/1/2008)

Mastroberardino 2001 Naturalis Historia Aglianico (Irpinia)

  1. $65
Here’s a southern Italian red with Barolo-like austerity: elegant notes of small berry fruit are seamlessly folded within layers of slate roof, ash, graphite, licorice and fine expressions rendered by volcanic soils and 18 months of oak aging. It really comes alive in the mouth, where the wine delivers power, concentration and a very long-lasting finish. This is…  — M.L.  (2/1/2008)

Mastroberardino 2004 Naturalis Historia Aglianico (Taurasi)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
Naturalis Historia is a benchmark wine for Campania—and all of southern Italy—with spectacularly clean mineral tones on the heels of berry fruit, plums, leather and spice. The wine’s approach is vertical and immediate but it also evolves slowly in the glass thanks to an ever-changing bouquet.  — M.L.  (10/1/2008)

Mastroberardino 1999 Radici Riserva Aglianico (Taurasi)

Here is a gorgeous smoky and spicy expression of Taurasi with harmonious notes of leather, black cherry, mineral, cola and pepper. The wine has enormous length and persistency and offers many layers of taste and texture. This is a beautiful bottle that should be cellared for at least five more years.  — M.L.  (11/1/2008)

Mastroberardino 2003 Radici Riserva Aglianico (Taurasi)

  • Cellar Selection
Give this wine a few minutes to evolve in the glass. It is a beautiful expression of Taurasi that does a very faithful job of exploring the depths and horizons of aged Aglianico. It emits elegant aromas of resin, dried berries, cassis, tobacco, rum cake, cola and crushed stone. The tannins are firm but also show a softer, silkier side which makes the wine…  — M.L.  (6/1/2011)

Mastroberardino 1997 Greco (Greco di Tufo)

  1. $25
An absolutely sensational Italian white wine, quite possibly the best bianco being made in Italy. From elevated vineyards near Avellino, it’s gold in color and features delcious pear, butter and almond flavors. The texture is round and soft; it caresses your palate. A wickedly wonderful wine to sip alone or to pour with supper.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Mastroberardino 2001 Radici Aglianico (Taurasi)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $41
This is among Campania’s best reds. The aromatic intensity and persistency is stratospheric and the wine doles out generous notes of red cherry, charred volcanic tones and licorice. It’s also a wine that evolves, limitlessly, in the glass, gaining intensity and purity the longer you wait. The tannins are solid and chewy and the duration of the length is excellent.  — M.L.  (2/1/2008)

This excellent vintage of the celebrated Taurasi Radici selection delivers an impeccable presentation of spice, black fruit and mineral that is incredibly smooth and well-integrated. There are no sharp points here and the wine offers sweet cherry flavors and great purity of fruit.  — M.L.  (10/1/2008)
