A great Merlot that completely satisfies for its dryness, its firm, ripe tannins, and its lush interplay of blackberry, cherry, tobacco and dark chocolate flavors. The finish goes on forever. As tannic as it is, it will be fine with a nice steak, or you can stick it in the cellar for a few years and let it soften.

Merriam 2008 Windacre Vineyard Estate Cabernet Franc (Russian River Valley)

Merriam is concentrating on Cabernet Franc from various appellations, with excellent results. This Russian River bottling is terrific for drinking now. It’s spicy and rich in red cherry jam, cherry liqueur and smoky sandalwood flavors that finish long and sweet. It would be great with Chinese-style roast pork.

Merriam 2007 Jones Vineyard Cabernet Franc (Dry Creek Valley)

A dry, tannicly rich, interesting wine to drink with a nice steak. It’s smoky in oak, with complex black cherry, cassis and spice flavors. Feels supple and good in the mouth, showing Dry Creek’s natural affinity for Cab Franc.

This is nice and soft, with ripe red-cherry and spice flavors. There’s an herbal, earthy dustiness that’s appealing. The fruit has a delicious sweetness that makes it ideal for pairing with charred meats.

Merriam 2005 Miktos Red (Russian River Valley)

This is a polished, complex young Meritage-style Bordeaux blend. It’s rich in blackberry, cherry, currant, cocoa and oak flavors, and fully dry. But it has an immaturity that makes it too sharp now. Better around 2011.

A first-rate wine, with well-ripened flavors of blackberries, espresso, cola, tea, and bitter chocolate, but made more interesting by fresh acidity not often seen in today’s better Merlots. This cool-climate wine also has sturdy tannins that suggest mid-term aging.

Starts with a nose that’s slow to open. In the mouth, the wine is dry and medium-bodied, with herb and tart red-cherry flavors. Decant it—once you do, you’ll see that it’s a good, dry, complex wine.
