Michel Torino 2011 Don David Finca la Maravilla #6 Malbec (Cafayate)

  1. $25
After years of tasting Don David Malbecs, here’s one that rises above the rest. This is jammy and stacked with brawny black-fruit aromas. The mouth is bulky and bullish, but balanced, with blackberry flavors that are coated with copious oak and end in a tornado of coffee, mocha, mint and oak. Drink now–2016.  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)

Michel Torino 2004 Ciclos Malbec-Merlot (Cafayate)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Chocolate and mint with the essence of coffee drives the bouquet. In the mouth, this Malbec-Merlot blend is ripe as can be, with cassis, blackberry and chocolate all making their mark. The finish is secure and mildly tannic, while the overall take is that this is a ribald, rich South American red.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)

Michel Torino 2003 Altimus Red (Cafayate)

  1. $50
Pitch dark in color, with a huge, oaky/earthy nose that cuddles deep black-plum fruit. Ultraripe and modern in style, with mounds of plum and blackberry flavors. Toasty and minty on the round finish. This is one rich wine; a massive improvement over the 2000 vintage, the last Altimus we rated. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)

Michel Torino 2003 Don David Malbec (Cafayate)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
In recent years Michel Torino has been making better and better Malbec, and this vintage is the best we’ve tasted. It offers sweet fruit and marzipan on the nose, while the big, chewy palate is lush and packed with berries, vanilla and chocolate nesting on pillowy tannins. Very chummy and almost lavish. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — M.S.  (4/1/2006)

Michel Torino 2007 Don David Reserve Syrah (Cafayate)

  1. $17
Tight, concentrated and deep, with rubbery aromas of black fruit and earth. The palate is rich and layered, with lemony oak setting up herbal, powerful berry fruit flavors that come with hints of tea and briar. Zesty as well as rich, and well balanced. Nicely done for Salta Syrah.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Michel Torino 2010 Don David Finca la Maravilla #6 Malbec (Cafayate)

  1. $20
Dark, earthy and smoky up front, this has notes of cola, lead pencil and moss that are distinct to Cafayate. Full in feel, this has high acidity, with flavors of mossy, herbal black fruits. Bold, earthy and individual in character.  — M.S.  (8/1/2012)

Michel Torino 2009 Altimus Red (Cafayate)

  1. $50
Over the years, Altimus—a blend of Malbec, Cabernet and Tannat—has been all over the map. This vintage is quite good, with burly aromas of bacon, balsam wood, campfire and black fruit. It’s a load in the mouth, where minty, lemony oak flavors vie with blackberry and foresty herb notes. Leather and tobacco flavors appear on the feisty finish.  — M.S.  (2/1/2013)

Michel Torino 2012 Don David Finca la Primavera #3 Torrontés (Cafayate)

  1. $25
Musky lime aromas and tropical perfume notes steal the bouquet. The palate is full, driving and demanding, with sheer acids and crisp flavors of lemon and passion fruit. A touch of sweet mango and offsetting bitterness work the finish. Drink this intense Torrontés as soon as possible.  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)
