Montirius 2006 Le Clos Red (Vacqueyras)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
The essence of raspberries here is even more expressive than in the 2005, accented by hints of crushed herbs (garrigue). It’s not as rich or concentrated as the 2005, but features greater elegance and finesse. Drink now-2015, possibly beyond.  — J.C.  (12/15/2009)

Montirius 2006 Confidential Red (Gigondas)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
From a small single parcel in Gigondas, this shows remarkably pure cola and plum fruit, pointed up by plenty of richness on the palate. Compared to Montirius’s 2006 Terre des Aînés, its tannins are chewier and softer at the same time, making it approachable now, yet capable of lasting at least through 2020.  — J.C.  (12/15/2009)

Montirius 2000 Red (Gigondas)

  1. $28
A hugely rich wine, from a biodynamic vineyard; it will be immensely long-lived. Its sweet fruit contrasts with brooding tannins and intense herbal essences. Drink this in 10 years.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Montirius 2001 Clos Montirius Red (Vacqueyras)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
A portion of the 111-acre Montirius vineyard is enclosed by ancient oak trees, which protect the vines from the searing winds of the Mistral normal in the Rhône valley. This gives the wine an intensity and density along with dark tannins. Concentrated black fruits have a powerful purity of flavor. Age for 5–10 years. Imported by Vintage ’59 Imports.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

Montirius 2000 Grenache-Syrah (Vacqueyras)

  1. $23
This 50-50 blend of Syrah and Grenache is a ripe, sweet-fruited wine, with rich jelly flavors and enough acidity to give it balance. Give it at least five years in the cellar.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Montirius 2002 Red (Gigondas)

  1. $30
Christine and Eric Saurel have 39 of their 111 acres in Gigondas. There they make a blend with Grenache and Mourvèdre. This 2002, from a difficult year in the Rhône, is impressively intense with flavors of ripe blackberries, of pepper and spice and huge, warm tannins. This will age well over 10 years.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

Montirius 2003 Clos Montirius Grenache-Syrah (Vacqueyras)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $22
Still youthfully purple in color, possibly in part because of the elevated proportion of Syrah in the blend (50%). Deeply fruited and complex, mixing raspberry flavors with notes of coffee, tobacco and spice. Drink now-2012.  — J.C.  (11/15/2006)

Montirius 2006 Garrigues Red (Vacqueyras)

  1. $20
Montirius’s Garrigues is lighter and fresher than its Le Clos bottling, but still very attractive, combining raspberries and garrigue in a supple, ready-to-drink format. Drink now–2012.  — J.C.  (12/15/2009)
