A classic Bordeaux blend, dominated by 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, Premiere Selection is a ripe wine, layered with sweet fruit dominating firm tannins. Despite those tannins, the big fruit flavors mean the wine is ready to drink now.
A stunning wine, with great balance and layers of flavor. Baked apple, melon, honeysuckle and delicate fynbos notes dance on the nose and palate, with a toasty thread that ties it all together. A peach-pit nuttiness remains throughout the long finish. Delicious now, but should age nicely through 2015.
This French-run estate (the family is involved with Gosset Champagne and Cointreau liqueurs) has produced a stunning Chardonnay. Big on creamy fruit and nutty, buttery flavors, this wine pairs toast, acidity and ripe fruit in a fine, complex balance. Best Buy.
The dry, tart berry, earth and tobacco profile is appealingly elegant, as is the lean but solid feel and good acidity. Closes long with tobacco and spice notes, and could pass for a Bordeaux cru bourgeois, or even a lesser classified growth. It’s drinking well now, but should improve further through 2004. Editors’ Choice. —M.M.
The name of this wine doesn’t lie; if you like mint, then this one’s definitely for you! Gorgeous notes of fresh eucalyptus take center stage to the blackberry and boysenberry fruit backbone. The menthol continues on in the mouth, with a gripping and structured finish that tastes like Thin Mint crumbles.
Matured in 100% new French oak, and it shows on the palate with tight wood tannins. This concentrated wine shows a dense, dark, brooding power from the estate’s oldest block of Cabernet vines. The tannins at the end are dry, and the wine deserves another four or five years to mature.
Gooseberry, citrus and green pepper lead on this full-bodied white from Morgenhof. On the palate, round flavors of gooseberry and lemon are lifted by a crisp acidity, though the wine is generally bigger than it is fresh. A serious Sauvignon Blanc that can be sipped alone or with spicy cuisine, seafood.
This complex, assertive dessert wine starts with aromas of orange marmalade, honey and tobacco spice, and on the palate, its smooth, integrated flavors of honey, citrus, cigarbox and spice are both elegant and unique. Its spicy, dry finish is an extra boost.
