So thick and so delicious. It is a deep, almost glowing, red-garnet color, and smells like fresh whipping cream and black pepper. Despite its almost 18% alcohol, this fortified Shiraz is very well balanced. It floods the palate with sweet cassis and vanilla, then settles down to reveal smoky, charred wood flavors, smooth, gripping tannins, and a nutty, long finish…

Consumers who like French-inspired Australian Shiraz should buy as much of this wine as they can find. The grapes are from 80–110-year-old vineyards, the winemaking is by Dan Standish (formerly at Torbreck) and the results are heavenly. Aromas are floral—verging on herbal in the way of the northern Rhône—backed by blueberries. It’s creamy and lush, mouthcoating…

Lifted blueberry and blackberry flavors are at the heart of this interesting Shiraz, and cherries and berries are on the nose. It’s not mouthfilling and overly rich, but strong in its own right—like there’s iron and charcoal at its core. Will show very well with a rare steak or Shiraz pie. Imported by Australian Wine Connection.

This is a very good wine, one that offers sour but plump black plum fruit with a tobaccoey, herbaceous edge. It almost needs a “If you don’t like Crozes-Hermitage, keep shopping” warning label; suits me just fine. Imported by…

Starts off a bit smoky and rubbery, then folds in aromas of blueberries, vanilla and cinnamon. The result is a satisfying blend of fruit and oak flavors with plenty of body and some drying tannins without real density of fruit or richness of texture.

The dominant note is sour plum. Grace notes of mint, chocolate and leather give it a modicum of complexity, but this blend of 50% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre and 25% Grenache is tart and a bit clipped on the finish. It’s medium-bodied, with a slightly creamy texture, but lacks the richness and expansiveness of the best Australian blends.
