Olssens 2002 Jackson Barry Pinot Noir (Central Otago)

  1. $29
Just short of excellent, this 2002 is the best wine I’ve yet tasted from Olssens. Dense aromas of tree bark and dark chocolate are accented by hints of strawberries. Round and ripe, the mouthfilling cherry-berry flavors pick up hints of cola before finishing with a tart juiciness. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.  — J.C.  (7/1/2005)

Olssens 2003 Slap Jack Creek Pinot Noir (Central Otago)

  1. $48
From its lovely dusty, dried-spice aromas to its pretty cherry flavors, this is all Pinot. Medium in body, it’s neither too heavy nor too light, ending with a delicate overlay of fine tannins. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.  — J.C.  (12/1/2005)

Olssens 2004 Riesling (Central Otago)

  1. $17
Lightly floral on the nose, this medium-bodied Riesling (12.5% alcohol) picks up notes of fresh greens and apples on the palate alongside plenty of bright citrus flavors. Despite over 6g/L residual sugar, crisp acidity keeps the finish fresh. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)

Olssens 2004 Gewürztraminer (Central Otago)

  1. $17
This dry-styled Gewürz offers restrained scents of roses and lychee fruit. In the mouth, it gives an impression of broad, mouthfilling softness, but then turns a bit hard and tart on the finish. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)

Olssens 2003 Desert Gold Late Harvest Riesling (Central Otago)

Produced from "cordon-cut" bunches, Riesling offers up intense honey, apple and pear aromas and flavors. With more than 11% residual sugar, you might expect this wine to be sticky-sweet, but thanks to crisp acids, it's not cloying. Tasty, well-balanced wine that just finishes a bit short.  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)

Olssens 2001 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (Central Otago)

  • Online Exclusive
Toasty on the nose and the palate, buffered by sour apples. Superficially likeable, but in the end you’re left with soft, somewhat hollow fruit under layers of smoky, spicy oak. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)
