American oak can smell like cloves, and this wine, which was aged in American oak, does, along with meat, chocolate and blackberries. It’s juicy in the mouth, with some numbing tannins. A little earthy and rough around the edges, and finishes with an almond-skin bitterness. — S.H. (9/1/2001)
