Pago del Vostal 2006 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $24
Slightly more leafy, herbal and burnt on the nose than ideal, but there’s also tobacco, cherry and earth notes to keep it proper. The palate is smooth in feel, with good depth, while the flavor profile has a salty side as well as black cherry and molasses. Good wine with a few issues.  — M.S.  (6/1/2010)

Pago del Vostal 2001 Reserva Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $20
This wine delivers a touch too much barnyard, and even when it settles, what’s left is slightly leafy and murky. Beyond that, it’s a holdover from a good vintage, so along with stark tannins and old-style Ribera ruggedness there’s cranberry, pine and leather notes. Drink now.  — M.S.  (4/1/2007)

Pago del Vostal 2004 Tinto Joven Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

Brandied and beet-driven on the nose, with density but not much clarity or poise. It's a touch rowdy in the mouth, where the acidity creates tang and the fruit is only so-so in quality. Persistent and forward more than anything.  — M.S.  (4/1/2006)

Pago del Vostal 2008 Tinto Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

Begins with a sweet marshmallow creaminess on the nose, which is followed by a firm, tanninc palate with snappy cherry and raspberry flavors. Clean and easy to understand, but in the end it’s a very regular wine.  — M.S.  (4/1/2010)

Pago del Vostal 2002 Crianza Tinto del Pais (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $14
Dull and rusty in color, with tree bark and other resiny aromas. Cherry and citrus tang carry the palate, which is tannic and wide. Finishes kind of tart and starchy. The overall impression is authentic but one of sharpness.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Pago del Vostal 2008 Roble Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $15
Creamy and confected on the nose, which is proof of the “roble” designation. The palate is rather narrow and acidic, with semi-sour flavors of berry and cherry. Cleansing and tart; decent but doesn’t go beyond that.  — M.S.  (4/1/2010)
