This is a massive wine on all levels, from the heavy black bottle and heavy wax seal, to the enormous richness and intensity of the liquid inside. Despite its heft and brawn, the wine also shows an elegant side thanks to a careful evolution over the years that has added tones of licorice and cola to the natural base of ripe fruit.

One sniff indicates that this wine saw some potent oak. The nose has distinct aromas of barrel char, sawdust and espresso. But it still rocks on with roasted dark-fruit flavors that are enhanced by hints of chocolate and vanilla. The finish is sweet and firm.

This inky Amarone offers dense and inviting aromas of plum, blackberry, freshly crushed black pepper, lead pencil, tar and leather. It delivers most of its intensity to the nose and makes for a food-friendly alternative. Try it with game or pork stuffed with stewed prunes.

Chewy and chunky, with more emphasis on power and concentration than elegance. Nonetheless, it imparts seductive aromas of coffee, cedar, cherry, smoked bacon, plum, herbs and sweet oak.
