Pico Cuadro 2007 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

Very pretty aromatics of blackberry, vanilla, tobacco, spice and coffee draw you in. The palate is lush and deep, with black fruit, cola and integrated spice flavors. Concentrated and smooth, and already approachable with roasted fig and an extra dose of black fruit on the finish. Drink from 2011–2015.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Pico Cuadro 2006 Vendimia Seleccionada Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

The nose is a tell-all of what’s to come: It’s heavy and pasty, with not enough freshness to rally the troops. The palate has grit and weight, but the dark berry flavors are soupy, earthy and stewed. Finishes on the raisiny side, and while this is by no means poor or a disaster, for $50-plus it should be better.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Pico Cuadro 2010 La Casa de las Esencias Verdejo (Rueda)

  • Online Exclusive

The aromas are slightly maderized and soft, with hints of baked apple and corn cake. It feels plump, mealy and a touch flat, with nectarine and wheat flavors. Chunky and peachy on the finish, this is starting to fade.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)

Pico Cuadro 2008 La Casa de las Esencias Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

This basic Ribera smells a lot like compost. The feel is sticky, while the flavors lean towards herbal and oaky, with a weedy note thrown in. It tastes a bit green and feels weighty on the finish.  — M.S.  (5/1/2013)
