A deep and dense wine, with coconut and blackberry dominating the weighty, powerful bouquet. A mature wine with its own set of proprietary virtues. Opens with cedar, cigar box and almost citric red-fruit aromas. Apple, vanilla and buttercup aromas are harmonious and lead to a driving, acidic palate that’s a bit foamy but houses zesty flavors of tart apple and citrus. Crisp as they come, which keeps the palate alive and tingling.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Pinord 2006 Clos de Torribas Crianza Tempranillo (Penedès)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Warm, earthy and integrated on the nose, with lightly baked berry fruit aromas and a touch of tree bark. The palate is medium in weight and intensity, and thus it reads as elegant, with good acidity and rooty flavors of earthy fruit and oak. A fresh wine that shows the lighter side of Tempranillo.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Pinord 2001 Pi del Nord Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $50
Sweet black fruit, road tar and a whiff of grass makes for an interesting, attractive nose. With its medium body and medium depth, the palate shows cherry, cassis and tomato flavors, and the finish offers a rush of red fruit, tannin and brown sugar. While this doesn’t bowl you over, it’s good Spanish Cabernet Sauvignon, something you don’t find every day.  — M.S.  (10/1/2009)

Early on it shows rich, ribald fruit aromas accented by graphite and licorice stick. Sweet, jammy, slightly reduced flavors of cassis and blackberry are chewy and dark, but not all that dense, complex or deep. Finishes persistent, with some grit and heat. Drink soon. Pinord NV Mediterraneo de Pinord Moscato

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
Made in the Moscato d’Asti style, with lemon-lime aromas and bubbles akin to Sprite. The palate features high citric acids and foaminess along with tangy lemon-lime and green apple flavors. Good on the finish due to the acidity and good overall for a Spanish version of sparkling Moscato.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)
