Potentially one of the best wines of the vintage, this is an extraordinary performance from a producer not previously noted for making such high-quality Vintage Ports. The wine—a special selection that at this stage, has no name—has great ripe fruit and huge tannins combined to make a dense, intense wine. It is dark, brooding and rich. There are also layers of…

The top wine in the Quinta do Portal range is in its second vintage. With 12 months aging in French oak, the power is all there in very dark, heavy tannins that dominate the fruit. This is a powerful expression of the richness and the structure of great Douro wines, all granite and mineral in character, dark and tough, sure to age well.

Auru is a play on the word Ouro, gold, from the Rio Douro, or river of gold. The wine is only made in the best years. It is a complete wine, with its spice and wood character just one element in the mix of sweet fruits, tight tannins and layers of acidity. It could well age over the next 3–4 years.

A perfumed wine, powered by a velvet texture and tannins that have a hidden kick. The big, bold fruit flavors show acidity and a dry edge while also being rich. Very dense, textured wine for aging over 5–6 years.

Always a powerful wine, this has the added benefit of being produced from a fine vintage, yielding a hugely dense and concentrated bottling. Power comes from the ripe blackberry and black currant fruit and from the dark, firm tannins. Age this wine at least five years.

An elegant wine, its red fruits balanced with acidity and layers of wood aging. The style is serious, the ripe fruit restrained by the tannins. It will age well, giving an always structured, fine and stylish wine.

Still very youthful, this concentrated wine has structure, deep black-fruit flavors and intense acidity. Its wood aging offers an extra spice note and a polished surface. Underneath, the wine is dense, needing aging. Give it 2–4 years.

Another Port success from the Branco family of Quinta do Portal, following their success with the 2003 vintage. This is a lovely, lively wine, with fresh acidity alongside good, mature fruit. It is ripe but very elegant, with a sweet, dried fruit aftertaste.
