Intense and concentrated, full of fruit, tannic structure and richness. It comes from a fine vintage and shows the ripe fruit, rich berry and red plum character, along with a more austere, ageworthy edge. A very fine wine, and one worth keeping for 5–6 years.

The idea of a Garrafeira is a special selection, and this wine from Quinta dos Roques, with its smooth, rich tannins and intense fruit flavors, is certainly special. Aged in wood for 13 months, it is packed with ripe black fruits, leaving sweet acidity and a dry aftertaste. Has good aging potential.

A hugely dark wine, with solid bitter chocolate flavors and layers of dry tannins. It comes from the granite soils of the home estate of Quinta dos Roques, a blend of Touriga Nacional, Jaen and Alfrocheiro. There are dry wood flavors and black plum fruits. Age for five years at least.

Many see the Touriga Nacional in the Dão as superior to the same grape in the Douro. As in this wine, it has power and richness, but with extra complexity, the fruit powered by dark tannins. The structure is solid, with a firm, spicy elegance.

Garrafeira in Portugal means a special selection, and this wine, from low yielding vines, has an impressive concentration. Its dark chocolate and mature spice flavors are just part of a powerfully fruity wine, all dark plum skins and sweet acidity. Ready to drink now, but could age.

This is a powerful, serious, wood-aged wine that blends rich, tarry black fruit flavors and dark, brooding tannins. A mouthful of fruit from the great 2000 vintage, it powers through with a burst of richness to the finish.
