  1. $20
With aromas of moss, balsam wood, baked berry and earth, this is a complex, interesting Rioja that’s overdelivering for $20. The palate is lush, soft and easy, but also pure and flavorful as the fruit runs deep and meaty. Finishing notes of licorice, dark spice and lasting berry fruit will make you happy you went here. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Ramirez de la Piscina 1995 Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $21
Berry, pine and leather aromas, with a full mouth of cherry, spice, tar, and leather make for lots of sensory fulfillment. Full, but not sharp, tannins and very good balance complete the package. Drinks well now and will improve for another 2 to 5 years.  — M.M.  (8/1/2000)

Charred and lemony smelling, with roasted blackberry, grilled beef and toasty oak aromas. The palate is layered and thick, with almost burnt black fruit flavors followed by licorice and prune on the finish. Oaky and smooth for a crianza.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Ramirez de la Piscina 2005 Crianza Red (Rioja)

  1. $16
A rock-solid wine that features a nose of natural leather, bacon and pure plum and berry. It’s friendly and a little plump on the palate, but well structured. The flavors of plum and black berries are mixed with a touch of oak, and thus the finish has a light creaminess that blends with chocolate and pepper flake. Nice crianza for everyday drinking.  — M.S.  (2/1/2009)

Ramirez de la Piscina 2006 Selección Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $22
Coconut and vanilla aromas are squarely in the lead, but the nose’s berry base is more than solid. Plump, round and showing good overall balance, with flavors of cola, dark fruit and coconut. A ripe, bulky crianza with plenty of leftover oak on the finish.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Ramirez de la Piscina 1997 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $15
This is a fairly classic Rioja with deep cherry, leather and earth aromas and flavors. It has medium weight and a touch of the pine-like quality in many Riojas. Not dense, but possessed of good mouthfeel and a positive finish with even, dry tannins.  — M.M.  (8/1/2000)
