Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2002 Scharzhofberger Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $84
Smells like a mix of apricots, pineapples and pears, with a judicious sprinkling of cinnamon. On the palate, the spice and earth components really kick in, adding richness to the fruit and honey flavors. Finishes with lingering sweetness. Approachable now, but should age beautifully.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2004 Scharzhofberger Auslese Fuder 4 Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $46
This lovely auslese starts with scents of bergamot, apple and slate, then delivers full-bore pineapple and supersweet apple flavors on the plate. Despite the intense sweetness, the wine is wonderfully balanced, thanks to zippy, pink grapefruit-like acids. Imported by Valckenberg International, Inc.  — J.C.  (2/1/2006)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2007 Scharzhofberger Auslese #10 Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Online Exclusive
This youthful auslese is still showing a lot of postfermentation estery characters: it’s very perfumed and floral, with such tropical notes as banana and pineapple. The fruit is nearly overwhelming, and the wine is on the sweet side, so it’s easy to overlook the underlying minerality, but it’s there. Worth cellaring until at least 2015.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2004 Josephshofer Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $33
This medium-bodied spätlese has a firm spine of acidity to help keep its shape through potentially decades of aging. Apple, clove and melon fruit is buttressed by layers of minerals and spice and a long, crisp finish.  — J.C.  (9/1/2006)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2006 Josephshofer Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $37
On the full side for a Mosel Riesling, this mouthcoating, succulent wine features piercingly pure fruit aromas of apple, citrus and honey. It’s richly fruity on the palate as well, adding in hints of strawberries, which fade slowly and elegantly on the finish.  — J.C.  (8/1/2008)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2009 Scharzhofberger Spätlese Riesling (Mosel)

  1. $41
The 2009 Scharzhofberger from von Kesslestatt evinces such crystalline purity of fruit that it almost hurts—in a good way. It’s light to medium in body, yet shows knife-edge intensity of strawberry and lime flavors and manages to be creamy-textured on the midpalate yet crisp on the finish. In short, it shows all of the wonderful contradictions of supremely ripe…  — J.C.  (6/1/2011)

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 2009 Graach Josephshöfer Trocken GG Riesling (Mosel)

  1. $54
In 2009, the Josephshöfer seems to offer the most mineral presence of the various von Kesselstatt GG bottlings, displaying an almost briny character at first, then molten rock tinged with hints of peach, orange and apple. The alcohol is only 12.5%, yet it comes across as full bodied, rich and creamy in texture, with a long, spice-driven finish.  — J.C.  (6/1/2011)

  1. $160
Slick with lanolin and honeycomb sheens, yet delicately textured, this is a symphonic harmony. Flavors of juicy, sweet, pink grapefruit and yellow peach are ripe and tangy, but shadings of jasmine tea and potpourri add edge on the finish.  — A.I.  (2/1/2013)
