R.L. Buller & Son NV Calliope Rare Tokay (Rutherglen)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $120
Thick, dark brown and looking as much like molasses as wine, Buller’s Calliope Rare Tokay has a soy-like meatiness to it, a leathery note that adds complexity to its notes of treacle and rancio. Almost too sweet and syrupy, with an endless finish.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

R.L. Buller & Son NV Calliope Rare Muscat (Rutherglen)

  1. $86
This is dark, almost black in color at the center, with greening evident at the rim. Syrupy, intense aromas of coffee and dark chocolate make an immediate impact on the nose, followed by syrupy, intense flavors of coffee and molasses. There’s mind-boggling concentration here, but just enough acidity to provide a sense of balance. Still, it’s hard to imagine…  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

R.L. Buller & Son NV Rare Calliope Muscat (Rutherglen)

Rich and viscous, this glass-staining, deep brown wine is loaded with notes of coffee, toffee and dried fruit. Pronounced rancio character marks the nose and lingers on the long, complex finish.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

R.L. Buller & Son NV Premium Fine Muscat

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
Fragrant with berries and citrus, this Muscat is also syrupy sweet without being cloying. Hints of coffee and caramel provide a deeper, darker foundation on the palate, with bits of candied orange peel and chocolate on the finish.  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

R.L. Buller & Son NV Fine Muscat

  1. $15
Buller’s entry-level Muscat blend sourced from inside and outside Rutherglen itself is a terrific value. It’s perfumed yet full bodied and rich, with sweet notes of golden raisins and dried figs, as well as darker hints of dates and molasses.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

R.L. Buller & Son NV Tawny Port

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
This young tawny, actually garnet in color, is warm and supple. And although this easygoing tawny lacks a bit of complexity, it boasts ample, mouthfilling flavors of black cherry, plum and chocolate.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)

R.L. Buller & Son 2004 Calliope Limited Release Durif (Rutherglen)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $35
Despite substantial alcohol (16.5%), this admirably concentrated wine doesn’t show that much heat, nor does it show any roasted, cooked character. Instead, it delivers black olive, leather and cassis flavors just tinged with mint and a fresh, lively finish hinting at coffee. The tannins are soft but present, helping to balance a hint of residual sugar. Drink now–2012.  — J.C.  (2/1/2009)
