Rosemount

Rosemount Winery is one of the largest and most recognized wine producers in all of the Australia. Located in the Hunter Valley of South Australia, it was established by Robert Oatley in 1969. Rosemount Vineyards was actually Australia’s largest family-owned winery until it merged with Southcorp Wines in 2001, which was later acquired by Foster’s Group. Rosemount's first wine release was a Chardonnay-Sémillon blend labeled as Pinot Riesling, reflecting the Hunter Valley tradition of then calling Sémillon "Hunter Riesling". Today, the majority of Rosemount wines are produced using the varietals of the Rhone Valley, particularly the reds. According to our Rosemont wine reviews, the Shiraz and GSM blends are the most popular wines and make up the bulk of Rosemont’s production. However their value line of wines also includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Riesling. In 2001, Rosemont Estates won the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award for Best New World Winery of the Year. For a full list of rated and reviewed wines simply look through our Rosemont wine ratings.

Rosemount 1997 Balmoral Syrah (McLaren Vale)

  1. $50
The ’97 version of this old-vines classic is earthy upfront, and packed with spicy plum and chocolate. It’s a full-volume wine, with lots of style. It’s dark and luscious, but still toes the line of balance with background licorice notes and overall rusticity  — M.S.  (10/1/2000)

Rosemount 1999 Show Reserve Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Powerful and clean, this Chard opens with pronounced aromas of citrus and peaches, underscored by honey, smoke and butter. The wine is tight and complex, seemingly wrapped in a minerally, iron straightjacket now, but with good aging possibilities; the long finish also supports this hypothesis. High acidity boosts the impression of strength and cleanliness. Editors’…  — S.H.  (6/1/2001)

Rosemount 1999 Balmoral Syrah (McLaren Vale)

This is what Syrah was meant to taste like. It has big blackberry flavors mixed with nutmeg and clove, which give it great complexity and depth. The finish is full and long. Drink 2004–2012.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Raciness, class and breed mark this delicious wine. With its bright, tropical fruit and spice aromas and bold, rich flavors, it’s a delight from start to finish. Crisp acidity carries waves of ripe extract through the long finish. Editors’ Choice.  — S.H.  (9/1/2001)

Rosemount 1999 Mountain Blue Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon (Mudgee)

  1. $50
Aromas of eucalyptus, mint and wet clay signal a quality wine. The wine has blackberry fruit and a finish that combines sweet molasses and gravelly tannins. May be enjoyed now or will hold up to a few years in the cellar.  — W.E.  (2/1/2003)

Rosemount 2002 Balmoral Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $45
An interesting wine, in that it doesn’t fit the current rage for blockbuster Shiraz. As winemaker Charles Whish says, “It doesn’t have to be huge and rich and jammy—it needs to have finesse and length.” This vintage does show a slightly lifted, vinyl-like note on the nose, but then settles down to offer elegant flavors of plum, spice and vanilla. Finishes long…  — W.E.  (8/1/2007)

Rosemount 1998 Show Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra)

  1. $24
Dense, dark, and young, this beauty is brimming with thrillingly clean, upscale fruit, if you can find it under heavy tannins. It’s a well-structured wine with a solid core of blackberry and cassis fruit. Oak is moderate, but noticeable. The overall result is a fancy, very good Cab.  — S.H.  (6/1/2001)
