Rosenblum Cellars was founded in 1978 by veterinarian Dr. Kent Rosenblum and his wife, Kathy. The Rosenblum winery is located in Alameda, California, where it produces its renowned Zinfandel, as well as Grenache, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Rhône-styled whites and dessert wines. In 2008, Diageo, the spirits, wine and beer giant, purchased Rosenblum Cellars. Among the Rosenblum wines designated Editors’ Choice by Wine Enthusiast Magazine are the 2004 Richard Sauret Vineyards Zinfandel (Paso Robles), 2001 Holbrook Mitchell Trio Bordeaux-style Red Blend (Napa Valley); and 2003 Rominger Vineyard Syrah (Yolo County). Rosenblum ratings have a proven track record with many 92+ point scores.

Incredibly smooth, plush and ripe. Beautifully balanced between power and finesse, with a fine-tuned balance of coffee, chocolate, black cherry, plum, blackberry, spice, pepper, tar, licorice and herbs. Lush tannins add supple focus, with a long, lingering finish. Great winemaking; great vineyard.

Oh, what a rich Zin this is. It’s like biting into a chocolate truffle that melts in your mouth. Then comes the blackberry liqueur, cherry pie, cinnamon roll. The wine is dry, but at the cost of mind-blowing alcohol, 16.5%. Love it or not, there’s nothing like it.

Kent Rosenblum’s customers can’t get enough of this small-production wine, and it’s not hard to tell why. It’s a high-alcohol, double-whammy punch of a wine. Dark, dry, soft and glyceriney, with enormously deep blackberry, blueberry, spicy rum, chocolate and coffee flavors that go on and on.

Beautiful Zin, balanced and elegant despite its native wild and woolly nature. Powerful flavors of blackberries, chocolate and pepper are wrapped in lush Napa tannins that are one of the wine’s nicest features. Dry and luscious, a distinctive achievement in Zinfandel.

A trio of Cabs Sauvignon and Franc and Merlot, from a vineyard near Yountville. Very ripe, and shows classic cassis, blackcurrant, and olive flavors, spiced up with sweet, smoky oak. Rich, refined and pure. A first-class wine for tonight or for the cellar. —S.H.

A Bordeaux blend and a very good one, with plush black currant, cherry and smoky flavors grounded in earthier tobacco and herbs. The tannins are rich and firm. This classy wine exudes pleasure and is best in its youth.

As balanced and impressive as a fine Napa Cabernet, with its sweet tannins, velvety texture and overall quality. The only difference is in the flavors. Here, you get cassis, cherries, chocolate and that distinctive brambly pepperiness that Zin owns.

Rosenblum 2002 Rockpile Road Vineyard Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

Big in flavor, high in alcohol, this is an only-in-California Zin. The ripe flavors are explosive, delighting the mouth with cassis, cherry, milk chocolate and vanilla fudge flavors, but as sweet as this sounds, the wine is totally dry. Lip-smackingly good.
