Salentein 2003 Reserve Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $62
This is the best and most expensive wine ever released by Dutch-owned Salentein, and it proves that this winery has finally mastered Mendoza. The color is excellent and the nose is full of bold fruit, leather, mint and more. It’s a huge Malbec with saturated cassis and black cherry flavors, and the feel and lushness are just right. For a ripe mini monster that’s…  — M.S.  (10/1/2007)

Salentein 2004 Primum Malbec (Uco Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $64
Year by year, Salentein’s top wines are improving. Primum is truly a fine wine, right up there with the country’s best. It’s harmonious and inviting, with cola, mineral, floral notes and honest black fruit aromas and flavors. The feel is secure and tight but also well balanced, with a touch of molasses but mostly just deep, driving black fruit. Muscular, intense…  — M.S.  (12/1/2008)

Salentein 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
A New World Cabernet close in structure to a good Sonoma bottling. Rich and ripe, with blackcurrant, cassis and herb flavors and rich, distinguished tannins. Oak adds subtlely and does not overwhelm. Easily as good as many California bottlings costing 2 or 3 times as much.  — S.H.  (1/1/2002)

Salentein 2001 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $9
A slight wine with rosy aromas and not much else. Far from overpowering, it’s kind of meek, with lean but clean fruit. Given Salentein’s wondrous production facility and lofty intentions, this is disappointing.  — M.S.  (7/1/2004)

Salentein 2001 Shiraz (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
Like a big Aussie Shiraz, young and jammy, opening with a blast of blueberry, blackberry, cassis, white chocolate, and vanilla. Huge in the mouth, collossal, stuffed with fruity-berry flavors, but very dry. The tannins are especially rich and well-textured. Great drinking, and best paired with roasts or even game.  — S.H.  (1/1/2002)

Salentein 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $18
Nice and full, with aromas of stewed fruit, tobacco, leather and black pepper. Impeccably sturdy and upright, but never hard nor tannic. Instead it’s full of plum, liqueur and chocolate flavors as well as some smoky espresso. Throughout it shows the right touch of power and pizzazz.  — M.S.  (3/1/2005)

Salentein 2003 Syrah (Uco Valley)

  1. $19
Salentein, after a few years of finding its way in Tupungato, has hit the mark with this tobacco- and spice-driven Syrah. The bouquet is ripe, with a hint of prune and earth, while the palate is full, juicy and full of berries, vanilla and coconut. Modern and woody, but satisfying.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)

Salentein 2004 Malbec (Uco Valley)

  1. $19
Lovely up front, with lavender, licorice and pepper accenting live-wire blackberry aromas. Jammy and extracted in the mouth, with pure berry flavors. This is a mountain of a wine that doesn’t pull its punches. Expect weight, tannin and extract but also a lot of flavor.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)
