San Fernando 2005 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Valley)

  1. $16
Really nice for a brand we haven’t seen before. This is classic Chilean Cab; ripe, smooth, seductive and fairly refined—and all for $16. The nose is totally welcoming, while the palate is deep and round, with cassis, raspberry and toasty flavors. Finishes with coffee, pepper and lasting tannins. A great value. San Fernando 2004 Gran Reserva Merlot (Central Valley)

  1. $16
Fairly straightforward and solid Merlot from Chile. The nose is sort of brambly, but there’s reasonably fresh plum and berry aromas. The palate is acid-charged and thus not sloppy or muddled, with bright cherry and red-plum flavors. Hints of pepper and herbs accent a zesty finish.  — M.S.  (9/1/2009)

San Fernando 2005 Gran Reserva Carmenère (Central Valley)

  1. $16
Aromas of wet clay, herbs and jammy berry fruit are the opening act. The palate is bulky and sweet, with less-than-precise flavors of red fruits and brown sugar. Finishes baked and fiery, with some roughness. Good but that’s about as far as it goes. Imported by Winelink Imports Corp.  — M.S.  (12/31/2008)
