This comes out swinging, with bullish berry and prune aromas that hint at being stewy but then pull back. It’s saturated and tannic but not rough, with black fruit, chocolate, toast and pepper flavors. Minty and dark, with a licorice note on the finish. Drink now–2016.

Despite tough vintage conditions, Bodega Septima got this blend of Malbec, Cabernet and Tannat right. The nose is dark, solid and full of attractive black fruit and coconut aromas. Lush and a mile deep on the palate, with sultry, smoky, dark flavors of blackberry, licorice and spice. A chewy, rich and balanced wine; drink now through 2014.

A fine wine from Septima, most likely with Malbec at its base (though the label says nothing of the sort). Aromas of blackberry, raspberry, perfume, pepper and asphalt are attractive, and the rooty richness and slight medicinality of the core flavors are unique but not out of focus. One of the winery’s best wines to date.

Septima is owned by Codorníu of Spain, and it hit the market solidly in 2002, disappeared for a couple of years, and now is back with a great Best Buy. The 2006 Malbec is a rock star wine in sheep’s clothing. Shows size and power along with pure fruit, texture and balance. Lush and fruity until the end.

From the prime growing area of Agrelo, this relative newcomer is owned by the Codornìu company from Spain, and it’s really a find. The nose is perfectly pure and round, with fine berry aromas and a light boost of oak. Otherwise, it’s simply a tasty, luscious easy drinker with cola, cherry and raspberry in spades. Fine balance and poise make it a steal.

Not a cookie-cutter Malbec; the nose is a little rustic and leathery, but with time black-fruit aromas rise up and take over. The mouth is juicy and ripe, with tasty black-fruit flavors and a dark, handsome finish. Fulfilling Malbec that's very good given the price.

A well-made everyday Malbec that gets it done in all ways. Smells nice and floral, with bold, smooth berry aromas. The palate is fresh and lively, with juicy berry flavors, controlled creamy oak notes and spice. Clean on the finish, and a pleasure to drink.

Warm, slightly leathery and earthy on the nose, with a hint of cheese. Feels full, nice and solid, with decent depth. Flavors of black fruits and pastry are friendly, while the finish is pleasant. Delivers all it can for the price.
