Shaya 2008 Habis Old Vines Verdejo (Rueda)

  1. $30
Butter, toast and resiny aromas tell you immediately that it’s barrel fermented, but unlike some of the competition, this wine manages to hold onto its core of green apple, white peach and pear without letting the oak interfere. Excellent with food, and it improves rapidly with each ten-minute interval. A great example of oak-aged Verdejo. Drink now.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Elegant and elevated, this shows fine integration of fruit and oak on the nose. It feels creamy, with barrel toast, dry spice and melon flavors. It is firm, healthy and structured on the finish courtesy of barrel fermentation and aging. A Burgundian facsimile from Rueda.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)

As far as value-priced Ruedas go, this is at the top of the heap. The nose is forward, clean as glass and not too pungent or demanding. Solid as can be across the tongue, with green fruit flavors that shine and don’t force the issue. Crystalline and pure from start to finish.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Opens with sly, clean mineral and white fruit aromas that hook you into its lively but round palate of citrus, green melon and fresh herbs. There’s plenty of fruit and acidity to keep it moving, and overall it’s a Verdejo done right.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

The apple and lime aromas are simple yet inviting. It feels round and mellow, maybe a bit low in acidity. The flavors of banana, vanilla bean and pear are friendly, while the finish is smooth and bears a tropical flavor.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)

Fresh and fairly perky smelling, this has aromas of lettuce, white flower and peach. It feels smooth but not soft, with pear, melon and apple flavors that feed nicely into the healthy finish that seems to bear some residual sweetness. Very nice for simple sipping.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)
