Sidewood 2008 Reserve Syrah (Adelaide Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
Interestingly, Sidewood’s 2008 Reserve Shiraz comes in considerably lower in alcohol than the regular bottling. It features a complex interplay of herb, spice and olive that gives it a stylistic resemblance resemblance to northern Rhône Syrahs. The tannins are silky, the finish long and balanced. Drink now–2018.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Sidewood 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Adelaide Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
Sidewood’s consulting winemaker, Nathasha Mooney (who made the still-stunning 1998 E&E Black Pepper Shiraz while at Barossa Valley Estate), is putting together some excellent wines that also represent good value, including this grapefruit-scented Sauvignon Blanc. This medium-bodied offering is long and intense, blending citrus with minerally spice reminiscent of…  — J.C.  (9/1/2010)

Sidewood 2008 Syrah (Adelaide Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
A concentrated, intense wine, filled with cherry-berry fruit and more than a hint of vanilla. It’s tart and edgy, with some firm tannins on the finish, so hold it another 12 months and then drink it over the next 5–6 years.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Sidewood 2009 Chardonnay (Adelaide Hills)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
Sidewood’s 2009 Chardonnay is a throwback to the sort of delicious, well-priced Chardonnays Australia used to be known for, but with a touch more class. It delivers a big blast of upfront melon and peach fruit nestled in toasted cashew-like oak, then finishes fresh and citrusy. Good value for drinking over the next 6–12 months.  — J.C.  (9/1/2010)

An easy-drinking Shiraz, Sidewood’s 2007 features a creamy texture, hints of mint and vanilla and copious raspberry fruit. It’s crisp on the finish to help balance the softness of the tannins. Drink now–2017.  — J.C.  (9/1/2010)

Sidewood 2010 Pinot Gris (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $18
This medium-bodied dry white is notable for its balance and harmony. Citrus, wet stone and green apple aromas and flavors all come into play, none of them dominant, then end on a bright, grapefruity note. Drink now.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Sidewood 2009 Pinot Gris (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $16
Pinot Gris is trendy in Australia, which to date hasn’t meant great things in terms of home-grown quality. This is a pretty good example, offering a broad, thick texture balanced on the finish by peppery spice, while melon and apricot flavors carry the midpalate. Drink it over the next 6–9 months.  — J.C.  (9/1/2010)

Sidewood 2010 Sauvignon Blanc (Adelaide Hills)

  1. $18
This could be straight out of New Zealand given its styling, which features pungent notes of crushed tomato leaf and gooseberries. It’s light and refreshing, with a clean, crisp finish.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)
