Quite smooth and polished. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère and Petit Verdot adding something of value. The wine is snappy, healthy and well balanced. Simone 2006 Grand Reserve Red (Maule Valley)

Meaty and leathery on first blush, with chunky dark-fruit aromas leading to a beefy palate with pure plum and blackberry flavors. Thick, layered and relatively deep, with a good DNA and commendable purity and overall quality. Very close to top-level Cab from Chile, with 15% Carmenère and 5% Petit Verdot. — M.S. (12/1/2009)

Simone 2007 Grand Reserve Red (Maule Valley)

Oaky at first, but then it settles into a very nice Cabernet-led wine. The palate is tight, drawing and firm, with flavors of cassis, olive and cured meats. It’s complex, leathery and dry, and the oak regenerates on the finish. Savory, interesting and not some clunky, overdone fruit bomb. Drink now through 2012. — M.S. (7/1/2010)

Very nice, with aromas of olive, herbal plum, bacon, salami and leather. It’s fresh and lively in the mouth, but with some weight and heft. The flavors of raspberry, plum have a controlled herbal element, and the finish is long, clean and alert. A very healthy, well-made wine. — M.S. (9/1/2009)

Simone 2005 Grand Reserve Red (Maule Valley)

The Grand Reserve blend, which is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and lesser parts Carmenère and Petit Verdot, is clearly Simone’s best wine. With the ’06 vintage, plum and cassis aromas pick up purity with airing, and the palate shows nice raspberry, cassis and plum flavors. A focused wine that makes its mark. — M.S. (9/1/2008)

Crisp and sturdy at this young stage, with a lot of green on the nose: apple, onion, melon, even celery. For a Maule Valley SB, this one manages to maintain freshness and liveliness.
