This big boy greets us with his deep ruby/black cloak. Loaded with cassis from start to finish, there is tremendous fruit depth here and a full, supple mouthfeel. Reminiscent of one of the successful large-scale ‘97 California Cabernets. Has tannins to resolve, best held for a year or two.

Seductive and forward, the Avec Chêne (with wood) boasts intense aromas of vanilla, butter and cream that frame the superripe peach and guava fruits. This is a ripe, bold and fruit-forward wine that’s creamy, lush and easily drinkable now. Rich, dark-fruit notes of brambly berry, boysenberry and black plum are spiced with notes of coconut cream, vanilla bean and whole black peppercorn. Although it might be flavorful, it’s also elegant and surprisingly quite accessible; drink now through 2016.

This mature wine is the top Bordeaux blend from the Malan family estate. With rich, red plum and black jammy fruits, this wine does not hold its big, bold tastes back. But with great, spicy flavors and a layer of dry tannins that appears at the end, it will stand up to rich foods.
